Hearing aids adjustment & your responsibility

Not knowing how to use hearing aids properly is a major reason for them not being worn. They are not like eyeglasses, which can correct vision fairly well. In fact NO hearing aids available will restore hearing to normal! This is not like putting on new ears, and all of a sudden, you will hear everything well. However, with a little patience and practice hearing aids can make sounds louder and make communication a lot easier for you.
In this sense, they are more like bicycle; you must first learn to ride before you can appreciate the experience.

Hearing aids takes time

You should also understand that it takes time to become accustomed once again to hearing normal sounds after living in a hushed environment. You must also learn to accept the less-than-perfect manner in which hearing aids reproduce these sounds. However, adapting to hearing aids is not an insurmountable task for the person who is willing to put forth the necessary effort.

Motivation, Perseverance and Patience

Hearing Aids CartoonGaining full advantage from hearing aids requires motivation, perseverance and patience on your part. Any reservations or negative feelings you might have about wearing hearing aids must first be overcome. If not, as the saying goes, "you would do just as well to dangle a shoelace from a button in your ear in the hope that people will talk louder and differently, when they notice it." Motivation, preserverance and patience will help you get accustomed to hearing aids and in turn, appreciation of them will take place. As your mind adjusts, noise and meaning will slowly sort themselves out, and within a month or two, you should be using your hearing aids with maximum effectiveness.

Your responsibility on hearing aids:

  • You may need a month or more to adjust to wear hearing aids.
  • You must explain to your family and friends what the limitations and benefits of hearing aids are.

Your hearing aid dispenser's responsibility:

Remember, when you purchased the hearing aids, you also purchased services, including counsellings in the use of the hearing aids, mechanical and electronic adjustment of the hearing aids, warranty service and repairs when needed. To make your adjustment time easier, your hearing aid dispenser may ask you to come back for post-fitting counsellings and follow up care.
