Once again, we find ourselves in the test lab, and this time we had a product from Beltone in our hands or rather on our ear. The full product name is Serene 4 64-DRW, and it is categorized among the upper mid-range devices. With the receiver (= speaker) that fits directly into the ear canal, it has good acoustic properties. The Serene 4 64-DRW is worn behind the ear, and it is a discreet, small hearing aid for mild, moderate, and also severe hearing needs.

Hearing comfort

We all agree that speech understanding is the most important task of hearing aids. However, from our experience in the hearing aid specialty store, we also know that hearing comfort is at least as important. It’s about processing background noise in such a way that it does not impair speech understanding while still creating a realistic sound image. Testing the Serene 4 64-DRW allows for solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional. Let’s take a look at the individual features:

Of course, this Beltone device has noise suppression, as that has become standard. Noise suppression means that uniform and somewhat monotonous sounds (e.g., air conditioning, vacuum cleaner...) are dampened. We are not necessarily dealing with a high-performance variant here, but in most listening situations, the noise suppression should be sufficient.

Fast, sharp sounds are detected here but only moderately reduced. Those who enjoy being outdoors will appreciate the wind noise suppression. While it doesn't dampen as strongly, it is definitely useful. With 12 frequency bands, you can already set a pretty good sound. A passionate musician may not be completely satisfied with this, but for normal hearing and sound needs, this number is more than sufficient. Spatial hearing may be a little difficult at first, but once you understand how the microphones behave in certain situations, you can fairly reliably estimate directions and distances.

Sometimes we encounter hearing aids that successfully process data using artificial intelligence, but that is not yet the case with this device.

Operation & connectivity

Since you probably don't have your hearing care professional by your side at all times, it can be quite helpful to be able to make changes to the hearing aid yourself. There are various operating options, and we will look at which ones the Serene 4 64-DRW has. A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can increase or decrease the volume in several steps. Additional programs for specific listening situations can also be activated with it. If you prefer to do without the button, it can simply be deactivated. The small remote control, which is available as an option, is very handy. For us, it's one of the most convenient ways to increase or decrease the volume or switch to another listening program. No one notices, and there's no need to reach for the ear.

Voice commands are a fairly new way to operate hearing aids. However, in this model, we do not yet have this option. That's not too bad - the main thing is that you can hear well. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, tap control could be conceivable, which would trigger a specific function by tapping your fingers on the ear. However, this option is not available in the Serene 4 64-DRW.

We always have our smartphone with us, and with the Serene 4 64-DRW, that's worthwhile because it can be customized via an app. The app is also really fun and offers a range of features that you wouldn't expect in a hearing aid app. If you enjoy playing, this is the right place for you. The Serene 4 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna and allows us to enjoy phone calls in stereo. This even gives us an advantage over normal hearing individuals. We think that's great and are happy to award points.

Simplicity & security

For the next chapter, we subjected the hearing aid to a small practical test. We wanted to know if it is easy to use and uncomplicated in everyday life. Unfortunately, with an automatic situation detection feature, the Serene 4 64-DRW cannot provide that; we need to make manual adjustments to hear well in different acoustic situations. The integrated acclimatization manager can be of great help when entering the world of hearing aids. Its task is to gradually increase the hearing aid's volume in tiny steps until the target volume is reached. This way, you can relax and gradually get used to the new hearing impressions. The Serene 4 64-DRW relies on battery power instead of rechargeable batteries. Advantage: Very long runtime with one battery. Unlike battery solutions, you rarely have to worry about the power supply. Disadvantage: It generates waste in the form of used batteries. This hearing aid uses a size 13 hearing aid battery.

The hearing aid has been classified into IP protection class 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust ingress. Water also cannot easily harm the hearing aid. This makes it well-equipped for outdoor activities where it can get wet and dirty. However, you should not go swimming or bathing with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can change the composition and ultimately cause damage.

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find some here: Are you among those plagued by tinnitus? Then you might use the optional tinnitus program in the Serene 4 64-DRW. Quiet, gentle sounds are tailored to your hearing and engage all areas of the inner ear. It's nothing more than a distraction maneuver, and it works surprisingly well. The tinnitus fades into the general noise and no longer bothers you. It's a simple but effective tool, earning extra points from us.

A real added value is provided by the remote maintenance service. To change the hearing aid settings, there's no longer a need to visit the specialist store; you can directly contact the audiologist through the app. Via a cloud service, you can then upload the new data package to the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.

Many hearing aids still have a few health features today. However, since the Serene 4 64-DRW does not have any specialized sensors for this, we cannot present any particularities here. The functionality of the Serene 4 64-DRW is limited to normal hearing, which is perfectly fine. Additional functions like fall alarms or Siri links have significant added value, but they are not relevant for a good hearing balance.
