Ideally, everyone would prefer to only hear speech and eliminate all other sounds. However, it's not that simple. Without sounds, our lives would sound very thin and empty. That's why hearing aids are designed to keep noises at bay without eliminating them completely.
With the Serene 9 64-DRW, the manufacturer provides the customer with comprehensive noise management. The mandatory noise suppression is supposed to respond to anything that hums along relatively evenly, such as heating or the extractor hood. In this device, ambient noise is processed in a way that allows for relaxed listening.
A somewhat stronger wind reduction would be desirable, but the one in the Serene 9 64-DRW is livable. The suppression of short, loud sound events has convinced us; it is quite effective. Spatial hearing works very reliably. Directional hearing is supported, and the spatial impression is good. A few more frequency channels would be desirable, but the existing 14 channels are already quite workable.
Signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence has not yet been employed here.

Operation & connectivity
Most hearing aids automatically adjust to their surroundings. Nevertheless, it is sometimes very practical to be able to make adjustments yourself. After all, the hearing aid doesn't know how you're feeling. We looked at the control options offered by the Serene 9 64-DRW: A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can increase or decrease the volume in several steps. Additional programs for specific hearing situations can also be activated with it. If you want to do without the button, it can simply be deactivated. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits easily in any pocket. When the person you’re talking to is speaking too softly again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or for driving can also be activated with the remote control.
Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Beltone unfortunately can’t yet. This would be practical if your fingers are not as mobile anymore or if you simply like smart gadgets. Besides buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control. This means you can just tap your ear briefly, and then the device switches modes. However, we don’t have that here at Beltone; it would have required very specific sensors.
Hearing aid apps are becoming increasingly popular. With the Serene 9 64-DRW, we’re in luck: there is a suitable app. This app has completely impressed us. Not only does it offer numerous possibilities to adjust the hearing aids to your personal hearing preferences, but it also includes plenty of lifestyle features. Problems when making phone calls with a smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are completely transmitted wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls and while listening to music during sports. Everything worked easily and smoothly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is needed.

At the end of our test report, there is still a bit of space for the extra features: Beltone has integrated a sound generator that plays some soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.
We find the remote maintenance service exciting, which can be utilized. If there is no opportunity to visit the audiologist, one can instead contact them via the app, briefly describe their hearing issue, and then receive a data package with a new hearing aid configuration. If it sounds good, they can download it to their hearing aids.
If Beltone had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, individual health tracking could even be possible. However, that is not the case here. These points are lost on the Serene 9 64-DRW in the evaluation. This Beltone hearing aid has no additional lifestyle options onboard. Elsewhere, there are voice assistants or reminder functions, but one does not need that for good hearing. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.
