This test report is about the Alpha 5 MNR T. It was developed by Bernafon and covers mild, moderate, and also severe hearing needs. This variant is worn behind the ear. The Alpha 5 MNR T is a slightly visible hearing aid from a good mid-range quality level. We achieve clean sound transmission by placing the speaker directly in the ear canal.

Hearing comfort

In the section on listening comfort, we look at how a hearing aid handles all the background noise. A comfortable noise management system significantly contributes to a user liking and regularly wearing their hearing aids. In this Bernafon device, solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional is possible. The regular noise suppression aims to attenuate uniform, rumbling background noises. In the Alpha 5 MNR T, ambient noise is reliably detected but only moderately reduced.

The simplest operating option is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This one also has it. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for step-by-step adjustment of the volume. Or do you need different special programs for your professional life or hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. If you would like to leave everything in automatic mode, you can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If your conversation partner speaks too softly again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.

In the test, we did not find an option for voice control. This function is not necessarily required, but we would have appreciated it nevertheless. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is a tapping control. To do this, you simply tap your fingers on your ear, which in turn triggers a specific function. However, this option is not available in this Bernafon device.

An app on the smartphone is supposed to simplify operation, and we have found one for the Alpha 5 MNR T. In addition to basic functions like volume and programs, we also find a few more buttons for personalization. One of the best features of the hearing aid is the direct streaming function. This turns the hearing aid into a TrueWireless headphone, receiving phone calls and other sounds directly in the ear. The prerequisite is a compatible smartphone that supports 2.4 GHz technology. The biggest advantage is that you can hear phone calls not just in one ear but in both. Additionally, the sound can be tailored to personal preferences.

Now let's take a look at how the usage shapes up in everyday life. Is the handling simple? Do I get a safe device? Typical hearing situations that everyone experiences in their environment are reliably recognized and adjusted through automatic controls. However, for more specific, recurring requirements, one cannot avoid using the manual hearing programs. A great bonus of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially if one has been hearing poorly for a long time and then wears a hearing aid for the first time, it is a huge relief. The volume does not need to be raised to maximum immediately. One can initially start at a lower level, and gradually and almost unnoticed, the amplification approaches the target.

We regret that the Alpha 5 MNR T does not have a rechargeable battery, but is powered by hearing aid batteries size 312. This is not a major issue, but one should remember to carry spare batteries. On the other hand, this hearing aid does not need to be charged daily; it runs for a long time on a single battery.

The data sheet certifies the Bernafon device with an IP protection class rating of 68. Thus, it is among the most durable hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water cannot enter the housing, as long as it does not submerge deeper than 1.5 m. However, be cautious. Shampoo, for example, alters the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. In everyday life, however, you can behave quite carefree.

This is particularly helpful when you only want to change a minor detail in the hearing aid settings but don't want to make a special trip to the audiologist. Instead, you can make contact through the app, and the hearing professional sends back a customized data package in the same way.
