Our testers have taken another hearing aid from a still moderate price category under the microscope. We present: The Bernafon Alpha XT 5 MNB T. Here we have a traditional hearing aid that is worn behind the ear. It can be used by anyone who wants to compensate for moderate, stronger, and changing hearing losses. Alpha XT 5 MNB T is a discreet hearing aid. Is it worth buying this model? We reveal the details.

Hearing comfort

At least as important as understanding speech is listening comfort. After all, our environment should sound as realistic and pleasant as possible. So let's take a look at noise management: In this model offered by Bernafon, the manufacturer provides the customer with comprehensive noise management. Of course, noise suppression is integrated, which is intended to mitigate strenuous background noises. We would classify the noise reduction of the Alpha XT 5 MNB T as mediocre. It is sufficient if you do not live in a very noisy environment. The hearing comfort package also includes wind noise suppression. It works very reliably, and we wouldn't want to do without it.

An impulse noise reducer for short, sharp sounds is sensibly integrated here and is completely sufficient for everyday use. Spatial hearing needs a bit of training with these hearing aids. While the movable microphones help, the placement of these on top of the auricle means the spatial sound is not like that of a normal hearing person. Everyone has their own unique hearing needs. It's advantageous to be able to customize hearing aids beyond the automatic functions. In our test, we discovered the following access options: For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume louder or quieter, there is a button on the device. You can also select additional programs for special hearing situations through this. If desired, there is a remote control for the hearing aid. This allows for effortless volume adjustment. The handling is not only child’s play, but no one will notice that you are currently adjusting your hearing aids.

The modern form of operation via voice command is not yet found in the Alpha XT 5 MNB T. Tap Control would have also been an interesting feature. With it, you can change functions with a quick tap on the ear. However, that is not available in the Alpha XT 5 MNB T yet.

The best way to adjust the Alpha XT 5 MNB T is with the accompanying app. Early apps had just a single screen, but this one offers far more than just the usual volume control. Clearly, it scores points with us. You no longer need headphones here, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds directly from the smartphone to the ears – if the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

Now let's take a look at how the usage looks in everyday life. Is the handling easy? Do I get a secure device? Typical hearing situations that everyone experiences in their environment are reliably recognized and adjusted through automatic settings. However, for more specific, recurring needs, one cannot avoid using the manual hearing programs. The adaptation to the new hearing sensation is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I don't have to do anything other than regularly wear my hearing aids.

Zinc-air batteries power the Alpha XT 5 MNB T. The battery change could become quite cumbersome for people with limited dexterity or vision. If you have concerns about that, you might want to consider a rechargeable model.

The Alpha XT 5 is nearly dust and waterproof and, with its IP 68 rating, is certainly well protected against external influences.

Before we reach the end, let’s take a look at the extras: We were really impressed with the optional tinnitus program. There are quite a few people who are occasionally or frequently troubled by a ringing or buzzing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the Alpha XT 5 MNB T is essentially just a sound generator. It’s about producing broadband noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all areas of hearing. The tinnitus gets drowned out and is no longer perceived as disturbing.

A very good additional benefit comes from the remote maintenance service. Through the app, you can contact your hearing care professional and describe your hearing problem. They can make adjustments accordingly and upload them to the hearing aids via the app. For people with little time or a long travel distance, this is a great service.

There are no sensors in this Alpha XT 5 variant, so the popular health tracking feature cannot be offered. For example, steps are counted throughout the day. As mentioned - this hearing aid does not have this function on board. You should take a closer look at the app for this Bernafon device. It actually contains a few extras that significantly expand the functionality of these hearing aids. We really find these additional functions great!
