Once again, we are focusing on a hearing aid from the company Bernafon. This time it is a behind-the-ear hearing aid, known from earlier times, called Viron 5 HDO. It is a discreet hearing aid and is priced somewhat above the average. It can be used for mild, moderate, and even severe hearing losses. Let's take a look at what the interior has to offer:
Hearing comfort
First, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied daily life? Here with this test device, we found very few options to influence comfort. As with all hearing aids, we also find the typical noise reduction feature here. It is supposed to reduce monotonous, noisy background sounds to the point where they are not as prominent. With the Viron 5 HDO, we hoped for a bit more depth in settings, but – well.
We found a basic wind detection, but unfortunately, there are no adjustable settings. When clattering, rattling noises occur, the Bernafon device activates its impulse sound dampener. Nevertheless, these sounds remain quite intense. We always take a close look at the number of equalizer bands. They are important to adjust the sound of a hearing aid as closely as possible to the hearing curve. In addition, the speech noise management also occurs within these bands. The Viron 5 HDO has 12 of them. That’s okay. In our tests, we also examine spatial hearing. Here, adaptive microphones are integrated, but the wireless connection between both ears is missing, making it impossible to reconstruct true 3D hearing. Nevertheless, one can manage quite well. With a bit of practice, directional hearing can be retrained.
The signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence is not yet involved here.

Operation & connectivity
Everyone has their own unique hearing needs. It is advantageous to be able to personalize hearing aids beyond the automatic functions. In our tests, we discovered the following access options: A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can adjust it louder or quieter in several stages. Additional programs for specific hearing situations can also be activated this way. If you prefer to do without the button, it can simply be deactivated. Upon request, there is a remote control for the hearing aid. This allows you to effortlessly adjust the volume. The handling is not only child’s play, but no one will notice that you are currently adjusting your hearing aids.
We are always delighted when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. However, this is currently not available in the Viron 5 HDO. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is tapping control. You simply tap your ear with your fingers, which activates a specific function. But this option is not available in this Bernafon device.
It is very convenient to adjust the hearing aids via the app. There is also a free app for the Viron 5 HDO. In our opinion, the range of functions is mediocre, but mostly sufficient. It’s best to try it out in demo mode beforehand. One of the best features of the hearing aid is the direct streaming function. This turns the hearing aid into a TrueWireless headphone and receives calls and other sounds directly in the ear. The prerequisite is a compatible smartphone that includes 2.4 GHz technology. The biggest advantage is that you hear calls not just in one ear but in both. Additionally, the sound can be tailored to personal needs.

The Viron 5 HDO automatically accesses the most important hearing settings, making daily use easier. However, those who frequently experience changing acoustic environments should have the manual additional programs configured. Some people find it difficult to adjust, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is an acclimatization manager that gradually introduces us to the required target amplification. The period can last a few weeks or even several months, and it can be individually adjusted. The individual steps are so small that one hardly notices that there has just been an increase in volume.
The Viron 5 HDO is not rechargeable. It is operated with hearing aid batteries size 13. Disadvantage: The batteries are disposed of after use. Advantage: The daily charging of batteries is eliminated, and the hearing aid runs continuously for several days on a single battery.
With an IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it withstands prolonged submersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

Lastly, we are interested to know if there are any additional goodies: Bernafon has integrated a noise generator that plays some soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.
A clever tool is the integrated remote maintenance service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a precious resource. Therefore, such a remote maintenance service is absolutely appropriate. Those who need a new programming for their hearing aids can easily contact their audiologist via the app and describe their hearing preferences. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send an individual setting as a data package to the app. From there, it is loaded onto the hearing aid and can be tested immediately. This definitely deserves extra points in our test.
If Bernafon had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, individual health tracking could even take place. However, this is not the case here. These points are lost for the Viron 5 HDO in the evaluation. You should take a closer look at the app of this Bernafon device. Because there are a few extras in there that significantly expand the functionality of these hearing aids. We really think these additional features are great!
