Once again, we're looking at an early widely available hearing aid for almost every hearing need: This model is called Jet PX 1 miniBTE R and comes from the company Oticon. It is worn behind the ear, and it is a small hearing aid. The Jet PX 1 miniBTE R is a model from the upper mid-range. Let's see if the pricing is justified.
Hearing comfort
Good speech understanding is a given in modern hearing aids. Equally important is hearing comfort. Only when the ratio of speech transmission to the level of background noise is right will hearing be perceived as pleasant. Therefore, let's take a look at the comfort features: With the Jet PX 1 miniBTE R, we found few options for comfort adjustment. Normal ambient noises such as street noise, the sound of a vacuum cleaner, or that from a fan should be dampened by classic noise suppression. In this Oticon hearing aid, we are not exactly spoiled, but we can manage well with simple noise suppression.
The impulse sound management in this device is not really recommended. Short, loud noises still sound quite intense. This hearing aid can detect wind noise, but the reduction is hardly noticeable. The device can tell whether the microphones are transmitting everything or should focus forward. This can help in conversation situations but does not replace true spatial hearing. A few more frequency channels would be desirable, but with the existing 14 channels, one can already work quite well.
Strategies based on artificial intelligence are not yet used in this Oticon hearing aid.

Operation & connectivity
In principle, the hearing aids work fully automatically, and that is also the mode that most people prefer. However, it can be quite useful to switch to another hearing program or simply adjust the volume in a difficult situation. That’s why we take a quick look at the operating options of the Jet PX 1 miniBTE R. A very quick way to correct the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can increase or decrease the volume in several steps. Additional programs for specific hearing situations can also be activated with it. Those who want to do without the button can simply have it disabled. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person speaking is too quiet again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.
We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. But that is currently not available in the Jet PX 1 miniBTE R. Besides buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control. This means you can simply tap your ear, and the device switches. However, we do not have that here at Oticon, as it would require very specific sensors.
The app is definitely very useful. Anyone with a smartphone should download it. Even though the app is not one of our favorites, it is still a useful addition to the Jet PX 1 miniBTE R. Problems with phone calls using the smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are completely transmitted wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls and for listening to music while exercising. Everything worked simply and smoothly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is needed.

How does one cope with a hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we will evaluate. Because only if such a device functions simply and unobtrusively can one become accustomed to it. An automatic situation detection is only rudimentarily integrated into the Jet PX 1 miniBTE R. We frequently have to rely on the manual options and adjust our hearing aid to the environments ourselves. Very important in terms of simplicity is the support during the acclimatization process. Especially after having heard poorly for years, it can sometimes be difficult to perceive everything at a realistic volume. In our test device, there is an acclimatization manager that helps us with very small volume adjustments throughout the adaptation phase. After a few weeks or months, we then reach the calculated amplification level.
A great relief in everyday life is the integrated battery. With it, my Jet PX 1 miniBTE R always has enough energy for the whole day, and I no longer have to worry about the batteries suddenly running out in the middle of an event. Also, for those with limited dexterity, a battery system is very helpful, as it eliminates the need to insert small button cells.
The Jet PX 1 is almost dust- and waterproof and, with its IP 68 classification, is certainly well protected against external influences.

We complete the test by checking if there are a few extras for you: A special tinnitus program can be programmed upon request in the Jet PX 1 miniBTE R. This allows for stimulating, pleasant sounds to be generated that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and are happy to award extra points.
Oticon keeps up with the times and offers a forward-looking feature with the remote adjustment service. Working people with little time can contact their audiologist online and have their hearing aids reprogrammed. Hearing aid users who have a longer journey to the specialist store also benefit from this special service.
Do you sometimes use your smartphone to track your daily steps? This is now not only easier but also more accurate. The Jet PX 1 miniBTE R from Oticon has integrated sensors that enable very precise tracking. It can also record other health data – in our view, this is a real added value. This Oticon hearing aid does not have any additional lifestyle options on board. Elsewhere, there are voice assistants or reminder functions, but you don't need those for good hearing. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.
