The Phonak Naida Lumity 30 PR in review

Im August 2024 hat Phonak eine neue Chip-Technik auf den Markt gebracht, das Phonak Infinio Sphere. Diese Technik gilt damit als überholt und erhält daher einen Abschlag in der Gesamtnote.

Our testers have examined another mid-range hearing aid. We present: the Phonak Naida Lumity 30 PR. Here we have a traditional hearing aid that is worn behind the ear. It can be used by anyone looking to compensate for mild to severe hearing loss. The Naida Lumity 30 PR is a somewhat discreet hearing aid. Is it worth buying this model? We will reveal the details.

Hearing comfort

Good speech understanding is a matter of course in contemporary hearing aids. Equally important is listening comfort. Only when the relationship between speech transmission and the level of background noise is right can hearing be perceived as pleasant. Therefore, let's take a look at the comfort features: The Naida Lumity 30 PR allows for solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional. Normal background noises such as traffic noise, vacuum cleaner noise, or that of a fan should be dampened by traditional noise suppression. In this Phonak hearing aid, background noise is reliably recognized but only moderately reduced.

An impulse sound suppressor is unfortunately not included in the Naida Lumity 30 PR. Phonak is likely to excite all outdoor fans with this device, as wind is not only pleasantly dampened, but speech understanding should also continue to work without issues. In our tests, we also examine spatial hearing. Although adaptive microphones are integrated here, the wireless connection between both ears is missing, and thus true 3D hearing cannot be reconstructed. Nevertheless, one can manage quite well. With a bit of practice, directional hearing can be retrained. While the Naida Lumity 30 PR does not have many adjustable equalizer bands, the 12 should be sufficient for a good listening experience.

A key component in the signal processing of the Naida Lumity 30 PR is artificial intelligence. The influence is positive, as many customers find conversations in noisy situations to be significantly more relaxed.

Operation & connectivity

Basically, the hearing aids work fully automatically, which is also the mode that most people prefer. However, sometimes it’s quite useful to switch to another hearing program or simply adjust the volume in a difficult situation. That’s why we’ll take a quick look at the control options of the Naida Lumity 30 PR. A very quick way to correct the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can adjust it to make it louder or quieter in several steps. Additional programs for special hearing situations can also be activated with it. If you prefer to do without the button, you can simply have it deactivated. A remote control is available for the Naida Lumity 30 PR. It is quite practical, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume up and down option as well as various hearing programs.

The modern form of control via voice command is not yet found in the Naida Lumity 30 PR. Tap Control would have also been an interesting feature. With that, you can change the function with a quick tap on the ear. But that is not available in the Naida Lumity 30 PR yet.

We always have our smartphone with us, and it is worthwhile for the Naida Lumity 30 PR because it can be customized via an app. The app is really fun to use and has a range of functions that you wouldn’t expect from a hearing aid app. If you enjoy playing, you are in the right place. A streaming option would not be bad for our digital everyday life. The device in question fulfills our wish and comes with a 2.4 GHz wireless module. This allows you to send phone calls and sounds directly from the smartphone to the hearing aids.

Simplicity & security

We continue the test with a brief assessment of how easy everyday use will be. Is it complicated? Do I have to be particularly careful? Or is there nothing else to consider? Simplicity in hearing aids means for us primarily that it adapts flexibly to changing hearing scenarios. The Naida Lumity 30 PR didn't quite convince us in this regard. While there is a situational detection that differentiates between quieter and louder environments, it works. However, those who are actively engaged in life might occasionally encounter limitations with it. But that's not too bad, as you can revert to manual adjustment options. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new hearing impressions.

An extremely useful development in recent years is, in our opinion, the integrated rechargeable battery. We are accustomed to recharging electronic devices in our daily lives. The Naida Lumity 30 PR is also rechargeable, which allows us to avoid the hassle of battery changes.

The hearing aid has been classified into protection class IP68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust ingress. Water also cannot easily damage the hearing aid. Thus, it is well equipped for outdoor activities where it can get wet and dirty. However, do not necessarily go swimming or bathing with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can alter the composition and ultimately cause damage.

Extras

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find some here: We noticed the tinnitus option. If you like, you can set up a special tinnitus program. This adds a gentle noise to the ears if needed, to distract a bit from the annoying tinnitus. The sounds can be tailored to personal hearing preferences.

A real added value is the remote maintenance service. For a change in the hearing aid settings, you no longer have to go to the specialist shop, but can contact the audiologist directly through the app. Through a cloud service, you can then load the new data package into the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.

Do you sometimes use your smartphone to track your daily steps? This is now not only easier but also more accurate. The Naida Lumity 30 PR from Phonak has integrated sensors that make tracking very precise. You can also record other health data - in our view, this is a real added value. Then there are a few lifestyle features that turn your hearing aid into a smart assistant. Connect with voice assistants like Siri, or discover what else is in the app. While this may not have much to do with actual hearing, it can be extremely useful.
