The ReSound Nexia 4 61-DRW in review

Are you curious about this hearing aid from ReSound? Let's see what we have found out. The Nexia 4 61-DRW is designed for mild, moderate, and also severe hearing losses and is worn behind the ear. It is a relatively small hearing aid from a good, mid-range quality level.
Due to the comfortable position of the speaker in the ear canal, we have a good, clear sound.
Hearing comfort
In our test, we usually start with the analysis of comfort features. A comfortable sound is characterized by a mix of speech and ambient noise that is realistic and as pleasant as possible. Various electronic tools handle all the noises. In the Nexia 4 61-DRW, solid comfort programming is possible through the audiologist. One of the noise tools is noise suppression, which is supposed to dampen things like traffic noise, refrigerator hum, or PC ventilation. Here, we would classify the noise reduction as average. It is sufficient if you do not live in a very noisy environment.
The Nexia 4 61-DRW also features impulse sound suppression. It reliably detects all short, clattering noises, but the attenuation is rather low. Those who enjoy being outdoors will appreciate the wind noise suppression. Although it does not dampen strongly, it is certainly useful. Spatial hearing with the Nexia 4 61-DRW requires a bit of practice. However, the adaptive microphone system provides quite good support in company. The Nexia 4 61-DRW has 12 adjustable frequency bands and is thus in the mid-range. A good acoustician can certainly extract a decent sound from it.
An exciting topic in hearing acoustics is the use of artificial intelligence, but this ReSound model does not yet implement it.
Rating Hearing comfort: 2,9
Operation & connectivity
This ReSound model automatically activates most functions. However, it can sometimes be very useful to expand the range of functions a bit more. In our test, we found out what options we have here. The simplest control option is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This one also has it. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for a gradual adjustment of the volume. Or do you need various special programs for your professional life or hobbies? These can also be activated through the button. Anyone who wants to keep everything in automatic mode can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you’re speaking to is too quiet again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or for driving can also be activated with the remote control.
We are always happy when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional function. For example, we would have liked to see a voice control feature at this point. But it is not available in the Nexia 4 61-DRW at the moment. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, a tap control could be conceivable, activating a specific function by tapping the ear with your fingers. However, this option is not available in the Nexia 4 61-DRW.
The operation of the Nexia 4 61-DRW through the associated app is relatively simple. It comes with a lot of additional functions and has impressed us quite a bit. We particularly enjoyed using the equalizer in the test. As a hearing person, you might feel a bit envious; you don’t find something like this in wireless headphones yet. Issues with phone calls using a smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are completely transmitted wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become redundant. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls as well as for listening to music while exercising. Everything worked simply and smoothly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is needed.
Rating Operation & connectivity: 1,3

Simplicity & security
Another point in our checklist is handling. Does everything work simply and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure a safe application in everyday life? We would have liked the Nexia 4 61-DRW to have an automatic program that adapts to the environment. However, this is not available, so unfortunately, we have to deduct points here. The integrated acclimatization manager can be of great help when starting out in the world of hearing aids. Its task is to gradually increase the volume of the hearing aid in tiny increments until the target volume is reached. This way, you can calmly and gradually get used to the new hearing impressions. More information about acclimatization and other hearing aids with this feature can be found here: Acclimatization to Hearing Aids.
Zinc-air batteries power the Nexia 4 61-DRW. Changing the battery could become quite challenging for people with limited dexterity or vision. If you have concerns about this, you might want to look for a rechargeable model instead.
The data sheet certifies the ReSound device with an IP protection class of 68. This makes it one of the most robust hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water cannot enter the case unless it is submerged deeper than 1.5 m. Still, be cautious. For example, shampoo alters the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. However, in everyday life, you can behave quite carefree.
Rating Simplicity & security: 3,0
Extras
We all love goodies, so let’s take a last look at the extras that may be hidden in the hearing aid. ReSound has integrated a noise generator that plays some soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.
A clever tool is the integrated remote maintenance service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a precious commodity. Therefore, such a remote maintenance service is absolutely appropriate. Those who need a new programming of their hearing aids can easily contact the audiologist through the app and describe their hearing wishes. Via a cloud service, the professional can then send a custom setting as a data package to the app. From there, it is loaded onto the hearing aid and can be tried out immediately. This definitely deserves extra points in our test.
Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this ReSound model lacks the sensors for this service. The ReSound device focuses on the essential hearing functions and does not offer extras like voice assistants or translation features. While that could have been fun, it is not necessary for a good listening experience.
Rating Extras: 2,5
