The ReSound Nexia 4 88 DWC in review

We are looking at a conventional hearing aid for mild to profound hearing loss again: This model is called Nexia 4 88 DWC and comes from the company ReSound. It is worn behind the ear, and it is a discreet, small hearing aid. The Nexia 4 88 DWC is a model from the upper mid-range. Let's see if the pricing is justified.

ReSound Nexia presents the improved Omnia technology, now with the latest addition of the Bluetooth standard Auracast.

Hearing comfort

What is most bothersome for hearing aid users: Exactly, the background noise. That's why we'll first look at what comfort features the test device contains. The Nexia 4 88 DWC allows for solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional. A normal noise suppression feature is definitely present. It is supposed to dampen constant sounds like street noise or the humming of the air conditioning. In our test device from ReSound, we do not necessarily have a high-performance variant, but the noise suppression should be sufficient in most hearing situations.

At least, the Nexia 4 88 DWC includes a so-called bang filter. But is that always enough? Wind noise can sometimes become a problem outside. Therefore, a moderate wind noise management is integrated here. With 12 frequency bands, you can already set a good sound. A passionate musician might not be entirely satisfied with it, but for normal listening and sound needs, this number is completely sufficient. The adjustable microphones help to recognize specific directions and can also assist with noise cancellation, but the spatial sound was not very natural.

In this version, ReSound is not yet using artificial intelligence.

Operation & connectivity

Occasionally, one finds themselves in situations where it would be beneficial if the hearing aid were somehow adjusted differently. After all, we live in hectic times where the acoustic environment frequently changes. Most hearing aids have specific options for this purpose, allowing the user to influence their settings. Here’s how it looks with the Nexia 4 88 DWC: For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume, there is a button on the device. Additional programs for special hearing situations can also be selected through this. If desired, a remote control for the hearing aid is available. This allows for effortless volume adjustment. The handling is not only incredibly easy, but no one will notice that you are adjusting your hearing aids.

Voice commands are a relatively new way to operate hearing aids. However, this model does not have this capability yet. That's not a major issue - the main thing is that one can hear well. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is a tap control. Simply tapping on the ear with your fingers triggers a particular function. However, this feature is not available in this ReSound device.

Adjusting volume or special functions via an app is already widespread today, and the Nexia 4 88 DWC also follows this path and provides us with an app. This app offers much more than just hearing aid functions and gives us a glimpse of what hearing aids might be used for in the future - aside from good hearing. For our digital everyday life, a streaming option would be beneficial. The device in question meets our desire and includes a 2.4 GHz wireless module. This allows phone calls and sounds to be sent directly from the smartphone to the hearing aids.

Forget the disappointing sound quality when streaming and making phone calls. ReSound relies on the new Bluetooth standard to ensure energy-efficient streaming while providing a significantly fuller sound, as long as your smartphone is compatible. You'll notice the difference right away. We have summarized the current Bluetooth capabilities in hearing aids in this article, along with their advantages and disadvantages: Bluetooth

ReSound: TV Streamer

ReSound Nexia 4 88 DWC: So far, it was necessary to place a conspicuous adapter next to the television to transmit sound directly to the hearing aids. ReSound has introduced an extremely discreet transmitter with this device series that remains practically unnoticed by visitors.

Simplicity & security

For the next chapter, we subjected the hearing aid to a small practical test. We wanted to know if it is easy to use in everyday life and uncomplicated. Unfortunately, the Nexia 4 88 DWC cannot provide automatic situation recognition; we need to make manual adjustments to hear well in different acoustic situations. The adjustment to the new hearing experience is supported by a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely perceptible steps until my hearing loss is completely balanced. I only need to do one thing: wear my hearing aids regularly.

The Nexia 4 88 DWC is rechargeable and no longer requires hearing aid batteries. This is environmentally friendly since no used batteries need to be disposed of. At the same time, it is also extremely convenient, as there is no need to carry spare batteries. The hearing aids simply go into the charging station in the evening and are ready for use the next morning.

We had a carefree everyday life in our test due to the IP-68 certification. This means that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took out the hearing aids with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bathwater or saltwater.

ReSound Nexia 4 88 DWC: With the premium charging station, you can enjoy a piece of freedom. You can store power for up to 3 complete charge cycles in the integrated power bank.

Extras

We are almost at the end, but maybe this device still has a few gifts in the form of extra features? Let's take a look: A special tinnitus program can be programmed upon request in the Nexia 4 88 DWC. This allows for the generation of stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and are happy to award extra points.

A real added value is the remote service. You no longer have to go to a specialist store for an adjustment of the hearing aid settings, but can directly contact the acoustician via the app. Through a cloud service, you can then load the new data package into the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.

There are no sensors in this Nexia 4 variant, so the popular health tracking cannot be offered. For example, steps are counted throughout the day. As mentioned - this hearing aid does not have that function onboard. The functionality of the Nexia 4 88 DWC is limited to normal hearing, which is perfectly fine. Additional features like fall alerts or Siri connections add some value, but are not relevant for good hearing balance.
