The Widex Magnify 40 BTE 13 in review

The Magnify 40 BTE 13 from Widex is a conventional hearing aid worn behind the ear. The customer receives a small hearing aid from the upper mid-range that can compensate for mild, moderate, and severe hearing loss.

Hearing comfort

The comfort features determine how pleasant listening is experienced in everyday life. This hearing aid offers only the absolute essentials when it comes to hearing comfort. A classic noise suppression is supposed to reduce annoying background noises to a tolerable level. The Magnify 40 BTE 13 includes only a very slight noise reduction. Wind noise is another issue. Many enjoy being outdoors and can find themselves a bit disturbed by the wind. Unfortunately, there is no wind management, so one must simply endure the sounds of air movement.

A pulse sound damper is unfortunately not included in the Magnify 40 BTE 13. We have to forgo spatial hearing with the Magnify 40 BTE 13, but at least the microphones can be switched to a focused mode. As for the number of adjustable equalizer bands, we are dealing with 6 in quite a simple device. Of course, one can understand speech with it, but the sound is not quite what we would actually wish for.

The signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence is not yet utilized here.

Operation & connectivity

How can one fully exploit the potential of hearing aids in everyday life? We have discovered what access options are available with the Magnify 40 BTE 13. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. With this, one can adjust the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to the customer's wishes. Of course, usage is optional. We would have liked to have a remote control, but Widex does not offer one for this model. So no points here.

Voice commands are a fairly new way of operating hearing aids. However, we do not have this option in this model yet. That's not too much of a problem - the main thing is that one can hear well. Tap Control would have also been an interesting feature. With that, one can change the function with a quick tap on the ear. But this is not available in the Magnify 40 BTE 13 yet.

We searched in the app store for an app for further adjustments in vain; we would have preferred something different. A wireless connection to a smartphone or laptop is not possible, as the necessary hardware components are missing. One should carefully consider whether they can do without this feature, but just give it a try.

Simplicity & security

Let's continue with the test: How is the user-friendliness? Is it easy or complicated to handle the hearing aid? When it comes to adapting to changing hearing situations, we have to rely on the manual options with the Magnify 40 BTE 13. An automatic situation detection would definitely have made life easier, but it's not available here. There is also no automatic acclimatization manager yet. So I have to deal with the full target volume right away or have the hearing aid settings regularly adjusted by my hearing professional.

The Magnify 40 BTE 13 is not rechargeable; it is powered by hearing aid batteries. Unlike rechargeable batteries, it doesn't need to be charged daily, but the size 13 battery has to be replaced after a few days.

The hearing aid has been classified into IP protection class 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust penetration. Water also cannot easily harm the hearing aid. It is therefore well-equipped for outdoor activities where it can get wet and dirty. However, you should not necessarily bathe or swim with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can alter the composition and ultimately cause damage.

Extras

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find some here: Manufacturers often implement a tinnitus program in their hearing aids to help alleviate the annoying ringing. However, Widex has opted not to include this in this model. This is unfortunate, as it would provide real added value for many people.

Widex is keeping up with the times by offering a forward-thinking feature with the remote adjustment service. Working individuals with limited time can contact their audiologist online and have their hearing aids reprogrammed. Hearing aid users who have a longer commute to the specialist store also benefit from this special service.

Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Widex model lacks the sensors for this service. The hearing aid also forgoes additional features such as special assistance systems, a fall alarm, or language translators. This is not a major issue, as it does not affect the important hearing functions.

Conclusion: Widex Magnify 40 BTE 13

This test device finishes in the lower ranks and lacks some features. We give a rating of 4.13. This is acceptable for casual listeners, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
