Hearing comfort
Good speech understanding is a given in modern hearing aids. Equally important is listening comfort. Only when the ratio of speech transmission to the level of background noise is right can hearing be perceived as pleasant. Therefore, we take a look at the comfort features: For the Moment 220 BTE R D, we found very few options to influence comfort. Normal ambient noises such as traffic noise, the sound of a vacuum cleaner, or that from a fan should be dampened by classic noise suppression. In this Widex hearing aid, we have a relatively simple form of noise suppression that should be sufficient for normal environments.
The impulse sound management is relatively straightforward; it dampens short loud noises a little, which is fine. We searched in vain for wind management, as there is no wind noise suppression here. You need to train spatial hearing a bit with these hearing aids. While the movable microphones help, the placement on top of the ear cup does not provide the spatial sound experience of a normally hearing person. However, after a short adjustment period, spatial hearing works quite well. The number of equalizer bands is very important for adapting to hearing needs. The BTE R D only provides 10 and does not allow for many fine-tuning options in the long run.
Despite modern comfort features, tricky listening situations can still arise. For this, the Moment 220 BTE R D has an assistance mode in its app. Behind it is an artificial intelligence that analyzes the current environment and recalculates significantly better settings.

The simplest way to operate is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This one has that too. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for a gradual adjustment of the volume. Or do you need different special programs for your professional life or hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. Anyone who wants to keep everything in automatic mode can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. Those who prefer not to touch their ear to adjust the volume will appreciate the optional remote control. This allows for comfortable and discreet adjustments to the hearing aid.
For some time now, there has been a trend to adjust hearing aids louder or softer using voice commands. The idea is really good, but Widex is not yet there with this device. Don’t worry, this feature would be nice, but it is dispensable. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a quick tap of a finger without needing to press a button. However, this feature is not yet implemented here.
Smartphone apps are now often offered for better operability of hearing aids. Based on our assessment, the Widex app is among the better ones because it provides a good set of adjustment options. A streaming option would not be bad for our digital everyday life. The present device fulfills our wish and includes a 2.4 GHz radio module. However, those who frequently experience changing acoustic environments should have the manual additional programs configured. We give a big plus point for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It gradually increases the starting volume in very small steps until my hearing goal is reached. This significantly eases the adjustment to the new sound.
The Moment 220 BTE R D is rechargeable and no longer requires hearing aid batteries. This is environmentally friendly as there are no used batteries to dispose of. At the same time, it is also extremely convenient, as there is no need to carry spare batteries. The hearing aids simply go into the charging station at night and are ready for use the next morning.
The datasheet certifies the Widex device with an IP protection class rating of 68. This makes it one of the most robust hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water does not penetrate the housing unless it is submerged deeper than 1.5 m. Nevertheless, be cautious. Shampoo, for example, changes the surface tension of the water. You should also avoid saltwater. However, in everyday life, you can behave quite carefree.

Finally, let's take a quick look at whether there are any extras: Are you among those suffering from tinnitus? Then you could currently use the optional tinnitus program in the Moment 220 BTE R D. Soft, gentle sounds are tuned to your hearing and engage all areas of the inner ear. It's nothing more than a distraction maneuver, and it works surprisingly well. The tinnitus disappears into the general noise and is no longer annoying. This is a simple but effective tool and receives extra points from us.
A real added value is the remote maintenance service. You no longer have to go to the specialist store to change the hearing aid settings; instead, you can directly contact the audiologist through the app. A cloud service then allows you to load the new data package into the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.
There are no sensors in this Moment 220 variant, so the popular health tracking cannot be offered. For instance, steps are counted throughout the day. As mentioned - this hearing aid does not have this feature on board. Other hearing aids already have a few expanded options like a fall alert or reminder functions. We don't find that here, and that's not too dramatic because the normal hearing functions are still the most important.
