The Audio Service G5 12 Duo in review

Falls Sie an der neuesten Technik interessiert sind, sollten Sie noch ein wenig weiter stöbern, denn hier handelt es sich um ein Auslaufmodell. Die Gesamtnote wurde mit einem Abschlag versehen.

Our testers have examined another hearing aid from the upper price segment. We present: the Audio Service G5 12 Duo. Here we have a conventional hearing aid that is worn behind the ear. It can be used by anyone looking to compensate for mild to profound hearing losses. G5 12 Duo is a discreet hearing aid. Is it worth buying this model? We will reveal the details.

Hearing comfort

In the section on listening comfort, we look at how a hearing aid handles all the background noise. Comfortable noise management significantly contributes to a user liking their hearing aids and wearing them regularly. In this audio service device, solid comfort programming is possible by the hearing care professional. The regular noise suppression aims to mitigate uniform, hissing background noises. In the G5 12 Duo, this works quite well. In a normal hearing environment, one can certainly manage with it.

The noise filter in this hearing aid is quite solid and suitable for everyday use. For windy situations outdoors, Audio Service has provided a wind noise reduction feature. This is quite useful and is simply part of contemporary comfort equipment. One needs to train spatial hearing a little with these hearing aids. While the movable microphones help, the positioning of these microphones on top of the ear shell means that the spatial sound is not the same as that experienced by a normally hearing person. However, after a short acclimatization period, spatial hearing works quite well. The G5 12 Duo is one of the good hearing aids, at least in terms of the number of frequency bands. With 16 bands, it is well-equipped for precise adjustment to personal sound preferences.

Sometimes we encounter hearing aids that successfully process data with the help of artificial intelligence, but in this device, that is not yet the case.

Operation & connectivity

“Can I adjust something on my hearing aid myself?” “Is there perhaps an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when choosing a hearing aid, so let's take a look at the operating and connectivity options. For those who want to quickly and easily turn the volume up or down, there is a button on the device. Additional programs for special listening situations can also be selected through it. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is via a remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person opposite speaks too softly again, one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.

We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. But this is not available in the G5 12 Duo at the moment. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control. That means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and the device switches. However, we don’t have that here at Audio Service; it would have required very specific sensors.

In the App Store, we also find a suitable application from Audio Service. The app for the G5 12 Duo is not one of our highlights, but it has everything you need for your hearing systems. One of the best features in the hearing aid is the direct streaming function. This turns the hearing aid into a true wireless headphone and receives phone calls and other sounds directly in the ear. The requirement is a compatible smartphone that contains 2.4 GHz technology. The biggest advantage is that you can hear phone calls not just in one ear, but in both. Additionally, the sound can be tailored to personal needs.

Simplicity & security

Now let's take a look at how the usage in everyday life is. Is the handling easy? Am I getting a secure device? The situation recognition integrated in the G5 12 Duo is rated rather in the middle range. The most important loud and quiet situations are recognized and adapted. However, this is not quite sufficient for acoustically more complex moments, as additional manual adjustment options are unavoidable. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when someone has been hearing poorly for a longer time and then wears a hearing aid for the first time, it is a tremendous relief. The volume doesn't have to be cranked up to the maximum immediately. You can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost imperceptibly, the amplification approaches the target.

The G5 12 Duo is not rechargeable. It continues to get its power from disposable size 13 batteries that need to be changed every few days.

We had a carefree everyday life in our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then removed the hearing aids with wet hands - no problems at all. However, the water resistance really only refers to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bathwater or saltwater.

Rating Simplicity & security: 2,3

Extras

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find something here: We noticed the tinnitus option. If desired, one can set up a special tinnitus program. This gently plays white noise in the background to distract from the annoying tinnitus. The sounds can be customized according to personal listening preferences.

An online contact with the audiologist through the app would be very useful. This is quite common today and helps with minor adjustment issues. Unfortunately, Audio Service has opted out of this feature and therefore does not earn extra points.

Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Audio Service model lacks the sensors for this service. The functionality in the G5 12 Duo is limited to normal hearing, which is perfectly fine. Additional features like fall alerts or Siri integrations provide some value, but they are not relevant for good hearing balance.

Rating Extras: 3,3

Conclusion: Audio Service G5 12 Duo

In the overall result, this test device ranks in the lower positions and lacks some features. We give it a score of 4.32. This is acceptable for less demanding listeners, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
