The Beltone Serene 6 64-DRW in review
To create a hearing aid test report, we take a close look at the hearing aids and wear them ourselves for a while, if possible. This time it was the Serene 6 64-DRW from Beltone, a device from the Advanced Class that can compensate for both mild and more severe hearing needs. The Serene 6 64-DRW is a discreet, small hearing aid that sits behind the ear. By directly aligning the speaker with the ear canal, it has already met the basic requirements for reasonable sound quality.
Hearing comfort
Our first test category is hearing comfort. Actually, we could also say sound comfort, because that is mainly what it’s about. Does the hearing aid sound very technical or beautifully natural? Are too many background noises amplified, or do they stay pretty well in the background? In this device from Beltone, solid comfort programming is possible through the audiologist. The noise suppression is a very traditional feature; it filters out all the rumbling, uniform sounds from the environment and reduces their loudness. In the Serene 6 64-DRW, we would rate the noise reduction as mediocre. It is sufficient if you don't live in a very noisy environment.
This device can detect wind and slightly diminish the noise. When rattling, clanking noises occur, the Beltone device activates its impulse sound suppressor. Nevertheless, these noises remain quite intense. The Serene 6 64-DRW has 12 adjustable frequency bands and thus falls into the middle range. A good audiologist can certainly get a reasonable sound out of it. Spatial hearing is initially a bit challenging, but once you understand how the microphones behave in certain situations, you can quite reliably estimate directions and distances.
Sometimes we encounter hearing aids that successfully process data using artificial intelligence, but that is not yet the case with this device.
Rating Hearing comfort: 2,9
Operation & connectivity
The operating options for hearing aids today are as simple or as complex as everyone would like them to be. The basic functions are, of course, fully automated. We wanted to know how users can access the Serene 6 64-DRW beyond that. Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Serene 6 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be disabled if desired. The small remote control, which is available optionally, is very practical. For us, it is one of the most convenient ways to adjust the hearing aid louder or quieter or switch to another hearing program. No one notices it; reaching for the ear is unnecessary.
For some time now, there has been a trend to adjust hearing aids louder or quieter via voice commands. The idea is really good, but Beltone is not there yet with this device. Don't worry, this feature would be nice, but it's dispensable. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple tap in this Beltone model because it would have required specific sensors in the housing.
In our opinion, an app is better than a remote control because everyone likely has a smartphone in their pocket. The app for the Serene 6 64-DRW is really good; it has a lot of smart features that make hearing in difficult situations significantly easier. It is quite complex, but you can quickly find your way around. In demo mode, you can practice a bit. There are also a few surprising additional tools—have fun discovering! One of the best features in the hearing aid is the direct streaming function. This turns the hearing aid into a TrueWireless headset and receives phone calls and other sounds directly in the ear. The prerequisite is a compatible smartphone that includes 2.4 GHz technology. The biggest advantage is that you can hear phone calls not just in one ear but in both. Additionally, the sound can be tailored to personal needs.

Simplicity & security
We continue the test with a brief assessment of how easy everyday usage will be. Is it complicated? Do I have to be particularly careful? Or do I not need to pay further attention? The Serene 6 64-DRW has a solid everyday automatic that is likely sufficient for a quieter life. However, for more complex listening environments, we recommend the additional manual programs. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new auditory impressions.
The Serene 6 64-DRW is not equipped with a rechargeable battery. Instead, it uses a hearing aid battery of size 13. It needs to be replaced every few days.
The hearing aid has been rated at IP68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust ingress. Water also cannot easily harm the hearing aid. Thus, it is well-equipped for outdoor activities where it can get wet and dirty. However, you should not necessarily bathe or swim with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can alter the composition and ultimately cause damage.
Rating Simplicity & security: 2,3
Extras
The finale belongs to the extras, that is, small additional features that could earn the hearing aid a few extra points: A special tinnitus program can be programmed upon request in the Serene 6 64-DRW. This can generate stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and happily award extra points.
A real added value is provided by the remote maintenance service. For a change in the hearing aid settings, there's no longer a need to go to the specialist shop; instead, you can directly contact the audiologist via the app. Through a cloud service, the new data package can then be loaded into the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.
There are no sensors in this Serene 6 variant, so the popular health tracking cannot be offered. For example, steps are counted throughout the day. As mentioned - this hearing aid does not have this function onboard. The functionality in the Serene 6 64-DRW is limited to normal hearing, which is completely fine. Additional features like fall alerts or Siri links have a decent added value but are not relevant for good hearing balance.
