Our first test category is auditory comfort. Actually, we could also say sound comfort, because that's what it's mainly about. Does the hearing aid sound very technical or beautifully natural? Are too many background noises amplified, or do they remain quite good in the background? In this device from Beltone, a solid comfort programming by the audiologist is possible. The noise suppression is a very traditional feature; it filters out all chaotic, monotonous sounds from the environment and reduces their loudness. In the Serene 6 86 DWC, the noise suppression works pretty well. There are other models that can significantly reduce background noises more strongly, but this one should be sufficient for normal hearing in everyday life.
Also, for windy outdoor situations, the Serene 6 86 DWC is equipped. The signal processing can identify wind and reduce it a little. The impulse sound management is relatively simple; it dampens short loud noises slightly, which is okay. The Serene 6 86 DWC has 12 adjustable frequency bands and is thus in the mid-range. A good audiologist can certainly extract a reasonable sound from it. Spatial hearing requires a bit of practice with the Serene 6 86 DWC. But the adaptive microphone system offers quite good support in social settings.
One exciting topic in audiology is the use of artificial intelligence, but this Beltone model does not yet implement that.

This is how it looks with the Serene 6 86 DWC: Right on the hearing aid, there is a button. This can be used to change the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. Of course, using it is optional. We also enjoy the small remote controls, and we found one for this model. This allows for discreet adjustments to the volume or sound.
We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a fantastic additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. But this feature is currently not available in the Serene 6 86 DWC. Tap Control would also have been an interesting function. With that, you can change the function with a quick tap on the ear. However, this is not available in the Serene 6 86 DWC yet.
Hearing aid apps are becoming increasingly popular. With the Serene 6 86 DWC, we are in luck: there is a suitable app. This app completely impressed us. It not only offers numerous possibilities to adjust the hearing aids to individual hearing preferences, but it also includes plenty of lifestyle features. Problems making phone calls with a smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are transmitted completely wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls as well as for listening to music while exercising. Everything worked simply and smoothly. All that is needed is a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology.

We are almost at the end, but perhaps this device still has a few gifts in the form of extra features? Let's take a look: We really liked the optional tinnitus program. There are quite a few people who are occasionally or frequently plagued by a ringing or buzzing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the Serene 6 86 DWC is nothing more than a sound generator. It is about generating broadband noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all areas of hearing. The tinnitus gets drowned out and is no longer perceived as disturbing.
We find the remote maintenance service provided to be exciting. If one does not have the opportunity to go to the hearing specialist, one can contact them instead via the app, briefly describe their hearing problem, and then receive a data package with a new hearing aid configuration. If it sounds good, they can upload it to their hearing aids.
There are no sensors in this Serene 6 variant, so popular health tracking cannot be offered. For example, steps are counted throughout the day. As mentioned - this hearing aid does not have this function on board. It would have been nice to have a few lifestyle features, but they are not available in the Serene 6 86 DWC. Other hearing aids can score points with language translators or fall alarms, but here it remains within the usual range of functions.
