This test report is about the Alpha 1 MNR T. It was developed by Bernafon and covers mild to severe hearing losses. This variant is worn behind the ear. Alpha 1 MNR T is a slightly visible hearing aid at a rather affordable price. We achieve clear sound transmission through the direct alignment of the speaker in the ear canal.

Hearing comfort

What is most bothersome for hearing aid users? Exactly, the background noise. That's why we first look at the comfort features that the test device includes. With the Alpha 1 MNR T, we found only a few options for comfort adjustment. There is definitely a normal noise suppression feature present. It is supposed to reduce constant sounds like street noise or the hum of the air conditioning. In our test device from Bernafon, this works only to a limited extent. There is no more than a very basic noise suppression here.

Unfortunately, an impulse sound suppressor is not included in the Alpha 1 MNR T. However, the Alpha 1 MNR T is equipped for windy outdoor situations. The signal processing can identify wind and reduce it somewhat. The 12 equalizer bands provide a solid basis for programming the Alpha 1 MNR T. As sound enthusiasts, we wish for a few more, but for the typical situations we encounter in our daily lives, it can still generate quite a reasonable sound picture. The microphones in the Alpha 1 MNR T can be switched to face forward in the direction of sight. However, that is the only feature that slightly supports spatial hearing.

Speech in noisy environments is always a challenge. Bernafon addresses this issue by using artificial intelligence. The result is brilliant and clear speech transmission, while background noises still come through realistically loud.

Operation & connectivity

“Can I adjust something on my hearing aid myself?” “Is there perhaps an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when choosing a hearing aid, so let's take a look at the control and connection options. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. With it, you can change the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed entirely according to the customer's wishes. The use is of course optional. The small remote control, which is available as an option, is very practical. For us, this is one of the most convenient ways to adjust the volume of the hearing aid or switch to another hearing program. No one notices it; reaching for the ear is unnecessary.

In our test, we found no voice control option. This function is not necessarily required, but we would have been pleased to see it. This Bernafon model does not have touch control for the hearing aids, as specific sensors would have been needed in the housing.

An app on the smartphone is supposed to simplify operation, and we have found one for the Alpha 1 MNR T as well. In addition to basic functions such as volume and programs, we find a few additional buttons for personalization. One of the best features of the hearing aid is the direct streaming function. This turns the hearing aid into a TrueWireless headphone, receiving phone calls and other sounds directly in the ear. A compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz technology is required. The biggest advantage is that you hear phone calls in both ears, not just one. Additionally, the sound can be tailored to personal needs.

Simplicity & security

Another point on our checklist is handling. Does everything work simply and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? We receive relatively little support from the program automation in the Alpha 1 MNR T. Without some individual hearing programs, one would probably struggle to cope in a lively everyday environment. Very important for us in terms of simplicity is the support during acclimatization. Especially after having heard poorly for years, it can sometimes be difficult to perceive everything at a natural volume. In our test device, there is an acclimatization manager that helps us with very small volume adjustments throughout the adaptation phase. After a few weeks or months, we have then reached the calculated amplification level.

The Alpha 1 MNR T gets its energy from small disposable batteries that need to be changed every few days. While this is not rocket science, it should be considered especially for those with motor issues. A rechargeable battery would be much easier to handle.

We had a carefree everyday life in our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took out the hearing aids with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bathwater or saltwater.

Extras

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find anything noteworthy here: The tinnitus program is definitely worth mentioning. It will benefit all those who are troubled by annoying ear noises. Pleasant, quiet sounds are adjusted to gently surround the tinnitus. In the end, the tinnitus fades into the background noise and is hardly noticeable anymore.

The ability for remote adjustment is something we find very useful. It is especially helpful when you only want to make a small change to the hearing aid settings without having to travel to the audiologist. Instead, you can connect through the app, and the hearing professional sends back a customized data package in the same way.

If Bernafon had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, it could even allow for individual health tracking. However, this is not the case here. These points are lost in the rating of the Alpha 1 MNR T. Get even more out of the Alpha 1 MNR T by utilizing the smart lifestyle features. They expand the operational range of the hearing aids with various assistance programs and significantly enhance the functionality.

This test device ranks in the lower positions overall and lacks some features. We award a score of 4.14. For less demanding listeners, this is acceptable, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
