We are looking at a hearing aid, as known from earlier times, suitable for both mild and stronger hearing needs: This model is called Alpha XT 9 MNB T and comes from the company Bernafon. It is worn behind the ear, and it is a small hearing aid. The Alpha XT 9 MNB T is a model from the upper segment of the hearing aid prices. Let's see if the pricing classification is justified.

Hearing comfort

First, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of sounds does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied daily life? Here with this test device, we were impressed by the excellent sound management. As in all hearing aids, we also find the typical noise reduction feature here. It is designed to reduce monotonous, noisy ambient sounds to such an extent that they no longer take center stage. The Alpha XT 9 MNB T does this very effectively, significantly more so than in most other hearing aids.

Wind is also an issue that can limit hearing comfort outdoors. But the Alpha XT 9 MNB T handles it confidently and activates wind noise reduction in such situations. This feature is also adjustable in increments. Extremely useful is the impulse sound suppression. It captures all clattering, banging, and crackling noises and reliably reduces them. For a precise, natural listening experience, the number of adjustable frequency bands is of great importance. With 24, this Bernafon device is a true top model and allows for differentiated fine-tuning over several years. Normal hearing individuals typically do not concern themselves with spatial hearing. With this hearing aid, we do not have to either. A sophisticated system of directional microphones and binaural wireless networking creates a 3D effect that closely resembles natural hearing.

The signal processing of the Alpha XT 9 MNB T also utilizes artificial intelligence. This enables a far more realistic analysis of the hearing environment, and especially the clarity in noisy surroundings is noticeably better.

Operation & connectivity

The majority of functions of this Bernafon model are activated automatically. However, it can be very useful to have the option to expand the functionality a bit. In our tests, we found out what options we have here. The simplest way to operate it is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This model has one. It can be programmed according to your preferences. Do you wish for a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for gradual adjustment of the volume. Or do you need different special programs for your professional daily life or your hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. If you prefer to leave everything in automatic mode, you can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. If desired, there is a remote control for the hearing aid. With it, the volume can be effortlessly adjusted. The handling is not only child’s play, but no one will notice that you are just adjusting your hearing aids.

The modern form of operation via voice command is not yet found in the Alpha XT 9 MNB T. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, a tap control could be conceivable, which would trigger a specific function by tapping the ear with your fingers. However, this option is not available in the Alpha XT 9 MNB T.

Our favorite tool for hearing aids is the app, and this one is really appealing to us. In addition to the obligatory volume controls, there is also an option for sound adjustment. This significantly expands the potential of the Alpha XT 9 MNB T and provides relief when hearing becomes strenuous. We really enjoyed the direct, wireless streaming. This means that calls from the smartphone can be transmitted to the hearing aids without any additional accessories. This turns the hearing aid into the perfect hands-free system or wireless headphones. Listening to music or watching and hearing videos is also incredibly comfortable.

Simplicity & security

Another point on our checklist is usability. Does everything work easily and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe application in everyday life? A balanced situational automatic function is the most important aspect we look at when it comes to simplicity. After all, no one wants to constantly adjust the hearing aid. The Alpha XT 9 MNB T has proven in testing that it accompanies us comfortably and reliably through our everyday hearing. With its excellent full automation, this device is a real highlight. Very important in terms of simplicity is the support during the acclimatization process. Especially after having heard poorly for years, it can be challenging to perceive everything at a natural volume. In our test device, there is an acclimatization manager that helps us through the adjustment phase with very small volume adjustments. After a few weeks or months, we have reached the calculated amplification level.

The Alpha XT 9 MNB T is not rechargeable. It still gets its power from disposable size 13 batteries, which need to be changed every few days.

The data sheet certifies the Bernafon device with an IP protection class 68 certification. This makes it one of the most resistant hearing aids on the market. Dust doesn't stand a chance, and water also doesn't penetrate the housing unless submerged deeper than 1.5 m. Nevertheless, be cautious. Shampoo, for example, alters the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. However, in everyday life, you can behave completely carefree.

Extras

Finally, we want to know if the hearing aid perhaps offers any specials: A special tinnitus program is programmable upon request in the Alpha XT 9 MNB T. This allows for the generation of stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and are happy to award extra points.

A very good additional benefit is provided by the remote maintenance service. Through the app, you can contact your audiologist and describe your hearing problem. They can then adjust the settings accordingly and upload them to the hearing aids via the app. For people with little time or a long commute, this is a great service.

Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires special sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately do not have in the Alpha XT 9 MNB T. We really liked the additional features available in the Alpha XT 9 MNB T. Various assistants support your daily life beyond hearing and can be configured in the app. Such hearing aids are hard to give up. By the way, these lifestyle features are often still being worked on, so it’s possible that they may change depending on updates.
