We are once again looking at a traditional hearing aid for mild, moderate, and severe hearing needs: This model is called Leox SP 7 HDO 13 and comes from the company Bernafon. It is worn behind the ear, and it is a small hearing aid. The Leox SP 7 HDO 13 is a model in a higher quality category. Let's see if the price classification is justified.
Hearing comfort
The hearing comfort determines whether someone enjoys wearing their hearing aids or not. That is why we first looked at how the hearing aid handles background noise. For this model introduced by Bernafon, we found only limited options for comfort adjustment. Of course, there is noise suppression integrated, which is supposed to minimize exhausting background sounds. In the Leox SP 7 HDO 13, the manufacturer has included a simple noise reduction feature, but it cannot be further adjusted. The Leox SP 7 HDO 13 does have wind reduction, but it doesn't really help much outdoors.
The impulse sound management is relatively simple; it dampens short loud noises a bit, which is okay. Unfortunately, spatial hearing is not very developed. The hearing aids can focus forward, but this does not help when trying to determine from which direction a car is approaching or where someone is calling from. The 14 equalizer bands provide a solid basis for programming the Leox SP 7 HDO 13. As sound enthusiasts, we do wish for a few more, but for the typical situations we experience in our daily lives, a quite reasonable sound profile can already be generated from them.
Other hearing aids already use artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but the Leox SP 7 HDO 13 does not yet incorporate this strategy.

Operation & connectivity
The operation options for hearing aids today are as simple or as complex as anyone would like. The basic functions run completely automatically, of course. We wanted to know how a user can further access the Leox SP 7 HDO 13. A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can increase or decrease the volume in several steps. Additional programs for specific hearing situations can also be activated with it. If someone wants to do without the button, they can simply have it deactivated. A remote control for the hearing aid is available upon request. This allows you to effortlessly adjust the volume. The handling is not only childishly easy, but no one will notice that you are currently adjusting your hearing aids.
In our tests, we did not find a way to control it by voice. This feature is not necessarily needed, but we would have appreciated it nonetheless. Tap Control would also have been an interesting feature. With that, you could change the function with a quick tap on the ear. But that is not available here in the Leox SP 7 HDO 13 yet.
The app is definitely very useful. Anyone with a smartphone should download it. Even though the app is not one of our favorites, it is still a useful addition to the Leox SP 7 HDO 13. Problems with making phone calls on a smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are completely transmitted wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls and while listening to music during sports. Everything worked simply and smoothly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is required.

Now let’s take a look at how the usage in everyday life is structured. Is the handling easy? Do I get a secure device? In terms of simplicity when it comes to hearing, we don’t make any compromises. We expect the hearing aid to function fully automatically in the background and not require us to constantly press any buttons. With the Leox SP 7 HDO 13, we are somewhat disappointed. Only basic situations are automatically recognized. This means that we cannot really do without manual control options. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when you have been hearing poorly for a long time and then wear a hearing aid for the first time, it is a tremendous relief. The volume does not need to be turned up to the maximum immediately. You can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost unnoticed, the amplification approaches the target.
The Leox SP 7 HDO 13 is not rechargeable. It is operated with hearing aid batteries size 13. Disadvantage: The batteries are disposed of after use. Advantage: The daily charging of batteries is eliminated, and the hearing aid runs continuously for several days on a single battery.
With IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse conditions. Dust cannot penetrate, it can withstand prolonged immersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

Finally, let's take a quick look at whether there are any extras available: A special tinnitus program can be programmed on request in the Leox SP 7 HDO 13. This allows for the generation of stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and are happy to award extra points.
We find the remote maintenance service quite exciting, which can be utilized. If one does not have the opportunity to go to the hearing care professional, they can instead contact them through the app, briefly describe their hearing problem, and subsequently receive a data package with a new hearing aid configuration. If it sounds good, they can upload it to their hearing aids.
A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors that can track certain personal health data. However, the Leox SP 7 HDO 13 does not offer this feature. We really liked the additional functions that come with the Leox SP 7 HDO 13. Various assistants support your daily life beyond hearing and can be configured in the app. Such hearing aids are hard to give up. By the way: These lifestyle functions are often still being developed, so it is possible that they may change with updates.
