Bernafon is launching its Viron 1 HDO, a formerly widely used hearing aid from a solid mid-price range. It is a discreet hearing aid for both mild and more severe hearing needs and is worn behind the ear.
Hearing comfort
The hearing comfort determines whether someone enjoys wearing their hearing aids or not. Therefore, we first looked at how the hearing aid handles background noise. In this model, which Bernafon presents to us, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. Of course, a noise suppression feature is integrated, which is supposed to reduce exhausting background noises. The Viron 1 HDO has a simple noise reduction integrated by the manufacturer, but it cannot be adjusted further. For active outdoor fans, we always find wind noise management sensible. While this device has one, it is not very effective. It cannot be individually adjusted either.
A so-called "bang filter" would have been nice, as it would have made the clattering when emptying the dishwasher a bit more bearable. But we have to do without that in the Viron 1 HDO. Unfortunately, spatial hearing is also not that great. The hearing aids can focus forward, but this doesn't help when trying to determine from which direction a car is approaching or where someone is calling from. An important point in our tests is the number of frequency bands. This plays a role when it comes to the precise programming of the hearing aids. It is also important for distinguishing between speech and sounds. Here we have 8 bands. There could certainly have been a few more, as we unfortunately cannot make such fine adjustments. However, those who do not place much value on a brilliant sound experience might get along quite well with the Viron 1 HDO.
Other hearing aids already use artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but this strategy is not yet present in the Viron 1 HDO.

Operation & connectivity
The operation options of hearing aids today are as simple or as complex as one would like. The basic functions run fully automatically, of course. We wanted to know how users can further access the Viron 1 HDO. First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very useful, as it is the simplest and quickest way to make adjustments. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If one prefers not to make adjustments directly at the ear, the button can naturally be deactivated. A remote control is available for the Viron 1 HDO. It's quite practical, fits in a pocket, and offers a volume option as well as various hearing programs.
The modern form of operation via voice command is not yet found in the Viron 1 HDO. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple tap of a finger in this Bernafon model, as it would have required specific sensors in the casing.
An app on the smartphone is supposed to facilitate operation, and we found one for the Viron 1 HDO as well. In addition to basic functions like volume and programs, we find a few additional buttons for personalization. We really enjoyed the direct, wireless streaming. This means that calls from the smartphone can be transmitted to the hearing aids without any additional accessories. This turns the hearing aid into the perfect hands-free system or wireless headphones. Listening to music or watching and hearing videos is incredibly comfortable.

Simplicity & security
Next in the test: How is the user-friendliness? Is it easy or complicated to handle the hearing aid? An automatic situation recognition is only rudimentarily integrated in the Viron 1 HDO. We have to revert to the manual options quite often and adapt our hearing aid to the environments ourselves. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new hearing impressions.
We regret that the Viron 1 HDO does not have a rechargeable battery, but instead operates with hearing aid batteries size 13. This is not overly problematic, but one should remember to carry spare batteries. On the other hand, this hearing aid does not need to be charged daily, and a battery lasts for a longer time.
The hearing aid is rated IP68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against the intrusion of dust. Water also cannot easily harm the hearing aid. Thus, it is well-equipped for outdoor activities where it can get wet and dirty. However, do not necessarily go bathing or swimming with the hearing aids. Bath additives or even the salt content in seawater change the composition and can ultimately cause harm.

Finally, let's take a quick look to see if there are any extras: Are you among those suffering from tinnitus? Then you could use the optional tinnitus program in the Viron 1 HDO. Soft, gentle sounds are tailored to your hearing and engage all areas of the inner ear. This is nothing more than a distraction technique, and it works surprisingly well. The tinnitus fades into the general noise and is no longer bothersome. This is a simple yet effective tool and gets extra points from us.
A real added value is the remote maintenance service. You no longer have to go to the specialist store for a change in the hearing aid settings; you can directly contact the audiologist via the app. Through a cloud service, you can then load the new data package into the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.
Many hearing aids still come with some health functions today. However, since the Viron 1 HDO does not have specific sensors for this, we cannot present any particular features here. We were really impressed with the additional functions included in the Viron 1 HDO. Various assistants support your daily life beyond hearing and can be configured in the app. Such hearing aids are hard to part with. By the way: These lifestyle functions are often still being developed, so they may change depending on updates.
