The Bernafon Viron 7 HDO in review
Bernafon is launching its Viron 7 HDO, a traditional hearing aid in a higher quality level. It is a small hearing aid for mild, moderate, and severe hearing loss and is worn behind the ear.
Hearing comfort
Firstly, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied daily routine? For this test device, solid comfort programming by the hearing technician is possible. As with all hearing aids, we also find the typical noise cancellation here. It is designed to reduce monotonous, noisy background sounds to the point that they are not as prominent. The noise suppression in the Viron 7 HDO works rather average, but it is somewhat adjustable.
We are pleased that the Viron 7 HDO includes wind reduction. An impulse sound suppressor for short, explosive noises is well integrated here and is completely sufficient for everyday use. With 14 frequency bands, one can achieve quite a good sound. A passionate musician may not be entirely satisfied, but this number of bands is completely adequate for normal hearing and sound needs. The spatial hearing must be trained a bit with these hearing aids. Although the movable microphones help, due to their position at the top of the ear cup, the spatial sound is not like that of a normally hearing person. However, after a short acclimatization period, spatial hearing works quite well.
Sometimes we encounter hearing aids that process data very successfully with the help of artificial intelligence, but this device has not yet reached that level.

Bernafon Viron 7 HDO:
Operation & connectivity
Almost everyone of us owns a smartphone, so it raises the question of whether it can be connected to the new hearing aid. Let’s take a look at the connectivity and usability of the Viron 7 HDO. The simplest way to operate it is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This one has it too. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for step-wise adjustment of the volume. Or do you need different special programs for your professional daily life or your hobbies? These can also be activated using the button. Anyone who wants to leave everything in automatic mode can simply ignore the button or even have it disabled. A very practical feature is the small remote control that is available optionally. For us, it is one of the most convenient ways to adjust the hearing aid louder or quieter or switch to another hearing program. No one notices it; there is no need to reach for the ear.
The modern form of operation via voice command is not yet found in the Viron 7 HDO. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a quick tap of a finger, without needing to press a button. However, this feature has not been implemented here yet.
Manual control includes an app. With it, you can access the hearing aid discreetly. In addition to volume control, you can also adjust hearing programs and a few other functions. You no longer need headphones because it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds directly from the smartphone to the ears – as long as the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

Simplicity & security
Of course, we are also interested in how quickly one gets used to the Viron 7 HDO and how easy daily use is. A reliable situation automation gives the Viron 7 HDO important points in terms of simplicity. Most hearing situations are recognized well, so manual adjustments are rarely needed. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially if you haven't heard well for a long time and are wearing a hearing aid for the first time, this is a huge relief. The volume does not have to be immediately turned up to the maximum. You can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost unnoticed, the amplification approaches the target.
The Viron 7 HDO gets its energy from small disposable batteries that need to be changed every few days. While this is not rocket science, it should be considered, especially with motor skills issues. A rechargeable battery would be much easier to handle.
The hearing aid has been classified in protection class IP 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust ingress. Water also cannot easily harm the hearing aid. This makes it well-equipped for outdoor activities, where it can get wet and dirty. However, do not take a bath or swim with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can change the composition and may ultimately cause damage.

Bernafon Viron 7 HDO:
Extras
At the end of our test report, there is still a little room for the extra features: Are you one of those suffering from tinnitus? Then you could use the optional tinnitus program in the Viron 7 HDO. Soft, gentle sounds are tailored to your hearing and engage all areas of the inner ear. It’s nothing more than a distraction maneuver, and it works surprisingly well. The tinnitus fades into the overall noise and no longer bothers you. This is a simple but effective tool, earning us extra points.
A clever tool is the integrated remote maintenance service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a precious commodity. Therefore, such a remote maintenance service is absolutely appropriate. Anyone needing a new programming for their hearing aids can easily contact the audiologist through the app and describe their hearing preferences. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send a custom setting as a data package to the app. From there, it is uploaded to the hearing aid and can be tested immediately. This definitely deserves extra points in our test.
Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires specific sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately do not have in the Viron 7 HDO. With devices like this one from Bernafon, our test reports are getting longer, as there are now also intelligent additional functions. Various assistants make your life easier and are personalized in the app. It is not strictly necessary, but it is a lot of fun. For this, we give a good rating.

Conclusion: Bernafon Viron 7 HDO
This test device ranks poorly overall and lacks some features. We give it a score of 3.99. This is acceptable for less demanding listeners, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
