Our testers have taken another hearing aid from the high-end category under the microscope. We present: The Bernafon Viron 9 HDO. Here we have a hearing aid, as known from the past, that is worn behind the ear. It can be used by anyone who wants to compensate for almost any hearing needs. The Viron 9 HDO is a discreet hearing aid. Is it worth buying this model? We will reveal the details.
Hearing comfort
First, we looked at the comfort features. The better these are, the easier and more pleasant the auditory impression is. A solid comfort programming by the audiologist is possible with this hearing aid. The traditional noise suppression ensures that uniform, unimportant noises are slightly reduced. In the Viron 9 HDO, the noise suppression can be adjusted to the customer's preferences. There is also wind management, which we find very good since many people enjoy being outdoors. The reduction of wind noise occurs at a moderate level.
Quickly occurring, rattling noises are noticeably and sufficiently dampened, which we find pleasant. Directional hearing often needs a bit of support for hearing aid users. The Viron 9 HDO provides this support confidently and allows for good spatial orientation. With 16 frequency channels, the Viron 9 HDO clearly belongs to the better devices and allows for an individual, well-sounding programming.
Signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence is not yet in use here.

Operation & connectivity
The majority of hearing aids automatically adapt to their surroundings. However, it is sometimes very practical to be able to make adjustments yourself. After all, the hearing aid does not know how you are feeling at the moment. We looked into the control options offered by the Viron 9 HDO: A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can increase or decrease the volume in several steps. Additional programs for specific listening situations can also be activated this way. If someone prefers not to use the button, they can simply have it disabled. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is through the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you are speaking to is too quiet once again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.
We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great extra feature. For instance, we would have liked to see voice control here. However, it is currently not available in the Viron 9 HDO. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple tap, as this Bernafon model would have needed specific sensors in the housing for that.
The manual control includes an app. This allows for discreet access to the hearing aid. In addition to volume control, you can also adjust hearing programs and a few other functions. We really enjoyed the direct, wireless streaming. This means that calls from the smartphone can be transferred directly to the hearing aids without any additional accessories. This turns the hearing aid into the perfect hands-free system or wireless headphones. Listening to music or watching videos is also incredibly comfortable.

How do you cope with a hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we will evaluate. Because only if such a device functions easily and straightforwardly can one become accustomed to it. The Viron 9 HDO has an extensive set of saved hearing situations. When a typical pattern is recognized, the hearing aid automatically activates the correct setting. The device supports the adjustment to the new hearing experience with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I don't have to do anything else but wear my hearing aids regularly.
Zinc-air batteries power the Viron 9 HDO. Changing the battery could be quite cumbersome for people with limited dexterity or vision. If you have concerns about this, it might be better to look for a rechargeable model.
The Viron 9 is virtually dust and waterproof, and with its IP 68 rating, it is certainly well protected against external influences.

Sometimes, hearing aids have additional features that can be quite useful. Let’s see how it is with this Bernafon device: We really appreciated the optional tinnitus program. There are quite a few people who are occasionally or frequently troubled by a whistling or ringing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the Viron 9 HDO is essentially just a sound generator. It aims to produce broad-spectrum noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all areas of hearing. The tinnitus gets drowned out and is no longer perceived as disturbing.
The ability for remote adjustment is something we find really good. It is very helpful whenever one just wants to change a small detail in the hearing aid settings but doesn't want to drive to the audiologist. Instead, you make contact via the app, and the hearing professional sends back an adjusted data package in the same way.
There are no sensors in this Viron 9 variant, so popular health tracking cannot be offered either. For instance, the number of steps throughout the day is counted. As mentioned - this hearing aid does not have that function onboard. Digital algorithms and appropriate apps increasingly allow for the integration of lifestyle features that support your daily life. We are impressed by what hearing aids like this one from Bernafon can do today. Be sure to give it a try!
