Our testers have taken another hearing aid from the budget segment under scrutiny. We present: The Hansaton AQ jam XC Pro 3 R. Here we have a conventional hearing aid that is worn behind the ear. It can be used by anyone who wants to compensate for almost any hearing need. AQ jam XC Pro 3 R is a small hearing aid. Is it worth buying this model? We will reveal the details.

Hearing comfort

The comfort features determine how pleasant hearing is experienced in daily life. With this hearing aid, solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional is possible. A classic noise suppression is intended to reduce annoying background noises to a bearable level. The AQ jam XC Pro 3 R does this quite well. In a normal listening environment, it is certainly manageable. Wind is also a topic that can limit hearing comfort outdoors. However, the AQ jam XC Pro 3 R handles this confidently and activates wind noise suppression in such situations. By the way, this is adjustable in stages.

The suppression of short, loud sound events has convinced us here; it is quite efficient. We miss a good spatial sound, but the automatic focus can be quite helpful in situations with multiple people. With 12 frequency bands, you can adjust a decent sound. A passionate musician may not be entirely satisfied with it, but this number is more than sufficient for normal hearing and sound needs.

Sometimes we experience hearing aids that successfully process data using artificial intelligence, but that is not yet the case with this device.

Operation & connectivity

Most hearing aids automatically adapt to their surroundings. However, it is sometimes very practical to make some changes yourself. After all, the hearing aid doesn't know how you feel at the moment. We looked into what control options the AQ jam XC Pro 3 R offers: First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very useful because it is the simplest and quickest way to make adjustments. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If you'd rather not adjust anything directly at the ear, you can of course deactivate the button. Those who prefer not to touch their ear to raise the volume will be pleased with the optional remote control. This allows for convenient and discreet adjustments to the hearing aid.

For some time now, there has been a trend to adjust hearing aids louder or quieter using voice commands. The idea is really good, but Hansaton has not yet reached that level with this device. Don't worry, this feature would be nice but is not essential. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and the device will switch. However, we do not have this feature at Hansaton because it would have required specific sensors.

Manual control includes an app. This allows for discreet access to the hearing aid. In addition to volume control, you can also adjust hearing programs and a few other functions. Problems with phone calls using a smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are transmitted completely wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary as a result. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls and while listening to music during sports. Everything worked smoothly and seamlessly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is needed.

Simplicity & security

How does one cope with the hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we will assess. Because only when such a device functions simply and effortlessly can one become accustomed to it. Simplicity in hearing aids means to us, above all, that it flexibly adapts to changing hearing scenarios. The AQ jam XC Pro 3 R has not completely convinced us in this regard. While there is a situation recognition feature that differentiates between quieter and louder environments, it works. However, those who lead an active life might occasionally encounter limitations with it. This is not too bad, as one can revert to manual adjustment options. Very important to us regarding simplicity is support during the acclimatization process. Especially after having heard poorly for years, it can sometimes be difficult to perceive everything at a natural volume. Our test device has an acclimatization manager that helps us through the adjustment phase with very small volume adjustments. After a few weeks or months, we then reach the calculated amplification level.

A highly useful development in recent years is, in our opinion, the integrated battery. In our daily lives, we are accustomed to recharging electronic devices, and the AQ jam XC Pro 3 R is rechargeable, allowing us to avoid the annoying battery changes.

We also take a look at the robustness of the housing and discover in the data sheet the protection class IP 68. This means that dust cannot penetrate at all, and water only becomes hazardous after prolonged submersion. Touch protection is also included.

The Comfort Charger also serves as a transport case. An additional bonus is the attachable power bank, which allows you to recharge the hearing aids up to 7 times.

Extras

Before we come to the end, let's take a look at the extras: A special tinnitus program can be programmed into the AQ jam XC Pro 3 R upon request. This allows for the generation of stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and are happy to award extra points.

The remote adjustment feature is something we really appreciate. It is very helpful whenever you only want to make a small change to the hearing aid settings but don’t want to drive to the audiologist. Instead, you make contact through the app, and the hearing professional sends back a customized data package through the same channel.

Many hearing aids today still include some health functions. However, since the AQ jam XC Pro 3 R does not have any specific sensors for that, we cannot present any special features here. The hearing aid forgoes additional functions such as special assistance systems, a fall alarm, or speech translators. This is not a big deal, as it does not affect the essential hearing functions.
