The Hansaton Beat FS 1 R T 13 in review
Our testers have examined another hearing aid for the budget-conscious. We present: The Hansaton Beat FS 1 R T 13. Here we have a hearing aid as one would know it from the past, worn behind the ear. It can be used by anyone who wants to compensate for both mild and more significant hearing needs. Beat FS 1 R T 13 is a slightly visible hearing aid. Is it worth buying this model? We reveal the details.
Hearing comfort
Our first test category is listening comfort. Actually, we could also say sound comfort, as that is what it's mainly about. Does the hearing aid sound very technical or pleasantly natural? Are too many background noises amplified, or do they remain fairly subdued? In this device from Hansaton, a solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional is possible. The noise reduction is a very traditional feature, filtering out all chaotic, uniform sounds from the environment and reducing their loudness. In the Beat FS 1 R T 13, we find a rather below-average noise reduction. Noise-sensitive individuals will have to make some compromises in terms of listening comfort.
Wind noise is always a topic when the hearing aid microphones are somewhat exposed. This is not a problem at all with the Beat FS 1 R T 13, as it has intelligent and effective wind noise reduction. It not only reduces the audible turbulence but also preserves speech intelligibility. Once you've experienced impulse sound reduction in a hearing aid, you won't want to go back. The Beat FS 1 R T 13 has such a feature and can thus easily handle all short and intense sound events. This includes, for example, dishes clattering in the kitchen or footfall noise on a hard floor. The Beat FS 1 R T 13 has 12 adjustable frequency bands, placing it in the mid-range. A good acoustician can certainly extract a reasonable sound from it. We cannot create a true 3D spatial sound with the current test device. Particularly outdoors, one should frequently look around to locate individual sound sources. However, focusing on a specific speaker works quite well with the integrated directional microphones.
Artificial intelligence is also used in the signal processing of the Beat FS 1 R T 13. This allows for a much more realistic analysis of the listening environment, and especially the clarity in noisy surroundings is significantly improved.

Operation & connectivity
Occasionally, you find yourself in situations where it would be beneficial if the hearing aid were set differently. After all, we live in hectic times, where the acoustic environment frequently changes. Most hearing aids have specific options to allow users to influence their settings. This is how it works with the Beat FS 1 R T 13: A very quick way to adjust the volume is with the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can adjust the volume up or down in several steps. Additional programs for specific listening situations can also be activated with it. If someone prefers to do without the button, it can simply be deactivated. The small remote control, which is available as an option, is very practical. For us, it is one of the most convenient ways to make the hearing aid louder or quieter or to switch to another listening program. No one notices anything; there is no need to reach for the ear.
We do not yet find the modern form of voice command operation in the Beat FS 1 R T 13. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is tapping control. For this, you simply tap your fingers on your ear, which in turn triggers a specific function. However, this feature is not available in this Hansaton device.
As is common today, we also find a smartphone app for the Beat FS 1 R T 13. This app contains solid basic functions and adds a few extra goodies. Problems with making phone calls on your smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are completely wirelessly transmitted to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls as well as while listening to music during sports. Everything worked simply and smoothly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is needed.

Simplicity & security
Our analysis also addresses the practicality of hearing aids in everyday life. This involves robustness, as well as special comfort features that aim to make daily use as easy as possible. When it comes to relaxed listening, the Beat FS 1 R T 13 is only simple if one primarily stays in quiet listening environments. If it does get louder or more challenging, we do not receive support from adaptive situational automatics. At best, one can only assist manually. Very important for us regarding simplicity is the support during the adjustment phase. Especially after having heard poorly for years, it can sometimes be difficult to perceive everything at a natural volume. In our test device, there is an acclimatization manager that helps us through the adjustment phase with very small volume adjustments. After a few weeks or months, we then reach the calculated amplification level. We regret that the Beat FS 1 R T 13 does not have a rechargeable battery, but instead operates with size 13 hearing aid batteries. This is not particularly problematic, but one should remember to carry spare batteries. On the other hand, this hearing aid does not need to be charged daily and will run for a longer time on a battery. With IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it can also withstand prolonged submersion in water, and it is protected against contact as well.

Extras
Sometimes it's the little things that make a hearing aid perfect. That's why we take a quick look at the extras that might be included: Hansaton has integrated a sound generator that plays soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.
A real added value is the remote servicing. No longer do you have to go to the specialist store for a change in the hearing aid settings; you can contact the acoustician directly through the app. Then, via a cloud service, you can load the new data package into the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.
A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors that can track a few personal health data, for example. However, the Beat FS 1 R T 13 does not offer this. The hearing aid forgoes additional functions like special assistance systems, a fall alarm, or language translators. This is not a big deal, as it does not affect the important hearing functions.
