Hearing comfort

At least as important as speech understanding is listening comfort. After all, our environment should sound as realistic and pleasant as possible. So let's take a look at sound management: For this model offered by Hansaton, we find only the absolute essentials regarding listening comfort. Of course, noise suppression is integrated, which is supposed to soften tiring background sounds. However, in the Wave 312 M, this works only to a limited extent. There is nothing more than a very basic noise suppression here. When the wind sweeps over the microphones outdoors, we wish for wind noise reduction. However, this is missing here, and in some outdoor situations, it can significantly impact listening comfort.

According to the manufacturer, impulse noise suppression is integrated, but we could hardly perceive it. Unfortunately, spatial hearing is not well developed. The hearing aids can focus forward, but this does not help when trying to determine from which direction a car is approaching or where someone is calling from. The Wave 312 M has 12 adjustable frequency bands, placing it in the mid-range. A good acoustician can certainly extract a reasonable sound from it.

Sometimes we encounter hearing aids that successfully process data using artificial intelligence, but this is not the case with this device yet.

Operation & connectivity

In principle, the hearing aids operate fully automatically, and this is also the mode that most people prefer. However, it can be quite useful to switch to another hearing program or simply adjust the volume in a difficult situation. Therefore, let's take a brief look at the operation options of the Wave 312 M. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. With it, you can change the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. Of course, the use is optional. A remote control is available for the Wave 312 M. It is very practical, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume adjustment option as well as various hearing programs.

We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. However, there is currently no such feature in the Wave 312 M. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, a tap control could be conceivable, which would trigger a specific function by tapping your fingers on your ear. However, this option is not available in the Wave 312 M.

The manual operation includes an app. This allows you to access the hearing aid discreetly. In addition to volume control, you can also adjust hearing programs and a few additional functions. Problems when making calls with a smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are transmitted completely wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls as well as for listening to music while exercising. Everything worked simply and smoothly. Only a suitable smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is needed.

This enables them to perceive dialogues and details better without having to increase the volume for others. Additionally, the TV connector enhances the television experience through individual listening comfort and reduces disturbances for housemates or family.

Simplicity & security

Our analysis also addresses the everyday practicality of hearing aids. This includes robustness, but also special comfort features designed to make daily use as easy as possible. When it comes to relaxed listening, the Wave 312 M is only simple if one predominantly stays in quiet listening environments. If it gets louder or more challenging, then we do not receive support from adaptive situational automatics. At best, one can only help manually. Very important in terms of ease of use is the support during the acclimatization process. Especially after having heard poorly for years, it can be difficult to perceive everything at a realistic volume. In our test device, there is an acclimatization manager that helps us with very small volume adjustments throughout the acclimatization period. After a few weeks or months, we have reached the calculated amplification level.

Wave 312 M relies on battery power instead of rechargeable batteries. Advantage: Very long battery life with a single battery. Unlike with battery solutions, you rarely have to worry about the power supply. Disadvantage: There is waste in the form of spent batteries. This hearing aid uses a hearing aid battery size 312.

The hearing aid has been classified in protection class IP68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust intrusion. Water also cannot easily damage the hearing aid. This makes it well-equipped for outdoor activities, where it can sometimes get wet and dirty. However, you should still avoid bathing or swimming with the hearing aids. Bath additives or even the salt content in seawater can change the composition and ultimately cause damage.

The integrated T-coil in hearing aids enables interference-free communication with inductive hearing systems that are used in many public facilities such as cinemas or churches, ensuring crystal-clear sound transmission.

Extras

We have addressed the most important factors in our test report. Before we conclude, we are looking for a few extras: For example, a tinnitus option would be interesting. Unfortunately, we did not find a way to alleviate tinnitus in the Wave 312 M.

We find the remote maintenance service exciting, which can be utilized. If one does not have the opportunity to visit the audiologist, they can instead contact them via the app, briefly describe their hearing problem, and subsequently receive a data package with a new hearing aid configuration. If it sounds good, one can upload it to their hearing aids.

If Hansaton had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, it could even enable individual health tracking. However, that is not the case here. These points are lost in the evaluation of the Wave 312 M. Other hearing aids already offer some extended options such as a fall alarm or reminder functions. We do not find that here, and that is not so dramatic because the normal hearing functions are still the most important.
