The Hansaton Wave R312 in review

Are you curious about this hearing aid from Hansaton? Let's see what we have found out. The Wave R312 has been designed for nearly every hearing need and is worn behind the ear. It is a rather inconspicuous hearing aid from the more affordable category.
Thanks to the speaker position in the ear canal, close to the eardrum, we have good, clear sound.

Hearing comfort

Our first test category is listening comfort. Actually, we could also call it sound comfort, because that's what it's mainly about. Does the hearing aid sound very technical or nice and natural? Are too many background noises amplified, or do they remain well in the background? In this device from Hansaton, we find only the absolute essentials related to listening comfort. Noise suppression is a very traditional feature; it filters out all ambient noise and reduces their volume. In the Wave R312, there is only a minimal basic reduction. A certain tolerance for noise should be expected from the hearing aid user here.

Unfortunately, this hearing aid does not yet have wind noise suppression. That's a shame. There is also supposed to be an impulse sound filter. However, it only reduces short, clattering sounds very little, so it's not really helpful. With 12 frequency bands, a fairly good sound can be achieved. A passionate musician might not be completely satisfied with this, but for normal hearing and sound needs, this number is completely sufficient. Unfortunately, spatial hearing is not very well developed. The hearing aids can focus forward, but this doesn't help when trying to discern which direction a car is coming from or where someone is calling from.

An exciting topic in audiology is the use of artificial intelligence, but this is not yet applied in this Hansaton model.

Rating Hearing comfort: 4,8

Operation & connectivity

Every person has their own hearing needs. It is advantageous if one can customize their hearing aids beyond the automatic functions. In our test, we discovered the following access options: The simplest control option is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This device has one as well. It can be programmed according to preferences. Do you wish for manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for gradual volume adjustments. Or do you need different special programs for your professional daily life or your hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. Those who want to keep everything in automatic mode can simply ignore the button or even have it disabled. A discreet way to adjust the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you're talking to speaks too quietly again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.

Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Hansaton unfortunately cannot yet. It would be practical for those whose fingers are not as dexterous or for those who simply like smart gadgets. Tap Control would have been an interesting feature as well. With that, one could change the function with a quick tap on the ear. But this feature is not available in the Wave R312 yet.

An app on the smartphone is supposed to make operation easier, and we have found one for the Wave R312 as well. Besides the basic functions like volume and programs, we find a few additional buttons for personalization. Headphones are no longer needed here, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds directly from the smartphone to the ears – provided the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

Simplicity & security

Let's continue with the test: How is the user-friendliness? Is it easy or complicated to handle the hearing aid? We would have liked to see an automatic program in the Wave R312 that adjusts itself to the environment. However, this is not available, so unfortunately, we have to deduct points here. Very important in terms of simplicity is the support during the adjustment period. Especially after years of hearing poorly, it can sometimes be difficult to perceive everything at a natural volume. Our test device has an acclimatization manager that helps us with very small volume adjustments throughout the adjustment phase. After a few weeks or months, we have then reached the calculated gain level.

The Wave R312 is not rechargeable; it operates on hearing aid batteries. Unlike a rechargeable battery, it does not need to be charged daily, but the size 312 battery needs to be replaced after a few days.

The hearing aid is rated IP68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against the ingress of dust. Water also cannot easily harm the hearing aid. Thus, it is well equipped for outdoor activities where it can get wet and dirty. However, do not necessarily go bathing or swimming with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can alter the composition and ultimately cause damage.

Rating Simplicity & security: 3,0

Extras

At the end of our test report, there is still a bit of space for the extra features: We would have liked to see a tinnitus program at this point, but unfortunately, there isn't one.

Hansaton keeps up with the times and offers a future-oriented feature with the remote adjustment service. Working individuals with little time can contact their audiologist online and have their hearing aids reprogrammed. Hearing aid users who have a longer commute to the store also benefit from this special service.

Many hearing aids still come with some health functions today. However, since the Wave R312 does not have specific sensors for that, we cannot present any special features here. The device from Hansaton focuses on the essential hearing functions and does not offer extras like voice assistants or translation features. While that would have been fun, it is not necessary for a good listening experience.

Rating Extras: 3,3
