We are taking another look at a traditional hearing aid for mild to severe hearing loss: This model is called Jet PX 1 miniBTE T and comes from the company Oticon. It is worn behind the ear and features a discreet design. The Jet PX 1 miniBTE T is a model from a solid mid-range price category. Let's see if the price classification is justified.

Hearing comfort

Right from the start, we focus on the topic of listening comfort. By that, we mean all the features that ensure an overall pleasant, rich, and disturbance-free sound. In the Jet PX 1 miniBTE T, we found only a few options to influence comfort.

The classic noise suppression is, of course, present here as well. Its task is to detect simple sounds from the environment and to soften them a bit. In this Oticon model, the effectiveness of the noise suppression is slightly above the required minimum. Nevertheless, the sounds will still be quite audible. The impulse sound management is not really recommended in this device. Short, loud noises still sound quite harsh.

We found a basic wind detection, but unfortunately, nothing is adjustable. The device recognizes whether the microphones should transmit everything or orient themselves forward. This can help in conversation situations but does not replace true spatial hearing. A few more frequency channels would be desirable, but the existing 14 channels can already work quite well. Sometimes we experience hearing aids that successfully process data using artificial intelligence, but this device has not yet reached that level.

Operation & connectivity

Would you like to be able to adjust something on your hearing aids yourself? We believe it can be quite useful to have one or two control options. Let's take a look at how this works with the Jet PX 1 miniBTE T. A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can increase or decrease the volume in several steps. Additional programs for special hearing situations can also be activated this way. If someone prefers to do without the button, they can simply have it disabled. The small remote control, which is available as an option, is very practical. For us, it's one of the most convenient ways to turn the hearing aid up or down or switch to a different hearing program. Nobody notices it, and reaching for the ear is not necessary.

Voice commands are a fairly new way to operate hearing aids. However, we don't have this feature in this model yet. That's not a big deal - the main thing is that you can hear well. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have tap controls. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and the device switches mode. However, we don't have that here at Oticon, as it would have required specific sensors.

An app on the smartphone is supposed to make operation easier, and we have found one for the Jet PX 1 miniBTE T as well. In addition to the basic functions like volume and programs, we find a few more buttons for personalization. Problems when making calls with the smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are completely transmitted wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls and while listening to music during sports. Everything worked simply and smoothly. Only a suitable smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is required.

Simplicity & security

We continue with the test with a brief assessment of how easy everyday use will be. Is it complicated? Do I need to be especially careful? Or do I not need to pay attention to anything else? The automatic situational recognition is supposed to make listening easier. However, the Jet PX 1 miniBTE T has some difficulties with changing or challenging acoustic environments, as it lacks a few adaptive algorithms. Additionally, one should always have a few extra hearing programs set up for this device. The adjustment to the new hearing sensation is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I just need to wear my hearing aids regularly.

We regret that the Jet PX 1 miniBTE T does not have a rechargeable battery, but is instead powered by hearing aid batteries of size 312. This is not a major issue, but one should remember to carry spare batteries. On the other hand, this hearing aid does not need to be charged daily; it runs for a longer time on one battery.

We had a carefree everyday life in our test thanks to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took out the hearing aids with wet hands – no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bathwater or saltwater.

Now we have looked at the main features of the hearing aid. But before we come to the end, we want to know if there are any additional features: Here we noticed the tinnitus option. Those who wish can have a special tinnitus program set up. This applies a gentle noise to the ears when needed to distract from the annoying tinnitus. The sounds can be customized according to personal hearing preferences.

A clever tool is the integrated remote maintenance service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a scarce resource. That's why such a remote maintenance service is absolutely appropriate. Those who need a new programming of their hearing aids can easily contact the audiologist via the app and describe their hearing wishes. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send a customized setting as a data package to the app. This is then loaded onto the hearing aid and can be tried out immediately. This definitely earns extra points in our test.

With hearing aids, you can do much more than just hear. Here in the Jet PX 1 miniBTE T, for example, there is the option to analyze your movement data. Then you can check in the evening how far you have walked. This type of health tracking is interesting for many customers, so further features could be added through future updates. This Oticon hearing aid does not have any additional lifestyle options onboard. Elsewhere there are voice assistants or reminder functions, but you don't need those for good hearing. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.
