Once again, we are focusing on a hearing aid from the company Oticon. This time, it is a traditional behind-the-ear hearing aid named Xceed SP 2 HDO 13. It is a slightly visible hearing aid, and it is priced in the high-end range. It can be used for moderate, more severe, and fluctuating hearing losses. Let's take a look at what the interior has to offer:

Hearing comfort

The comfort features determine how enjoyable hearing is experienced in daily life. With this hearing aid, we found few options for influencing comfort. A classic noise suppression is supposed to reduce annoying background noises to a tolerable level. In the Xceed SP 2 HDO 13, we had hoped for a bit more control, but – well. This hearing aid can detect wind noise, but the reduction is barely noticeable.

Our test discovered impulse sound damping. It slightly alleviates sharp, sudden noises. We miss good spatial sound, but the automatic focus can be quite helpful in situations with multiple people. The Xceed SP 2 HDO 13 has 12 adjustable frequency bands, placing it in the mid-range. A good acoustician can certainly extract a reasonable sound from it.

Sometimes we encounter hearing aids that process data very successfully using artificial intelligence, but this device has not reached that level yet.

Operation & connectivity

The operating options of hearing aids today are as simple or as complex as one would like. The basic functions operate fully automatically, of course. We wanted to know how a user can additionally access the Xceed SP 2 HDO 13. Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Xceed SP 2 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be deactivated if desired. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is through a remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you're talking to is speaking too softly again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or for driving can also be activated with the remote control.

For some time now, there has been a trend to adjust hearing aids using voice commands. The idea is really good, but Oticon is not there yet with this device. Don't worry about it; this feature would be nice but is not essential. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, tap control could be possible, which would trigger a specific function by tapping the ear with your fingers. However, this option is not available in the Xceed SP 2 HDO 13.

As is common today, we also find a smartphone app for the Xceed SP 2 HDO 13. This app contains solid basic functions and adds a few goodies on top. One of the best features of the hearing aid is the direct streaming function. This turns the hearing aid into a TrueWireless headset, receiving phone calls and other sounds directly in the ear. A compatible smartphone that includes 2.4 GHz technology is required. The biggest advantage is that phone calls can be heard not just in one ear but in both. Additionally, the sound can be tailored to personal needs.

Simplicity & security

Let's continue with the test: How is the ease of use? Is it simple or complicated to handle the hearing aid? Simplicity in a hearing aid primarily means that it adapts flexibly to changing hearing scenarios. The Xceed SP 2 HDO 13 did not quite convince us in this regard. There is indeed a situation recognition feature that differentiates between quieter and louder environments. That works. However, those who are active in their lives may occasionally encounter limits with this. But that's not too bad, as one can rely on manual adjustment options. The adjustment to the new hearing experience is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely balanced. I only need to regularly wear my hearing aids.

Unfortunately, the Xceed SP 2 HDO 13 is not equipped with a battery, so one needs to regularly use size 13 batteries for operation.

The Xceed SP 2 is almost dust and water resistant, and with its IP 68 classification, it is certainly well protected against external influences.

Extras

Als letztes interessiert uns, ob es noch ein paar Goodies on top gibt: Hier ist uns die Tinnitus-Option aufgefallen. Wer mag, kann sich ein spezielles Tinnitus-Programm einrichten lassen. Das legt bei Bedarf ein sanftes Rauschen auf die Ohren, um vom nervigen Tinnitus ein wenig abzulenken. Die Geräusche können nach dem persönlichen Hörgeschmack gestaltet werden.

Spannend finden wir den Fernwartungsdienst, den man in Anspruch nehmen kann. Wenn man keine Gelegenheit hat, zum Hörakustiker zu fahren, kontaktiert man ihn stattdessen über die App, beschreibt kurz sein Hörproblem und erhält anschließend ein Datenpaket mit einer neuen Hörgerätkonfiguration. Wenn die sich gut anhört, lädt man sie in seine Hörgeräte.  

Sensoren gibt es in dieser Xceed SP 2-Variante nicht, so dass auch das beliebte Gesundheits-Tracking nicht angeboten werden kann. Dabei werden z.B. die Schritte über den Tag gezählt. Wie gesagt - dieses Hörgerät hat diese Funktion nicht an Bord. In diesem Oticon-Gerät stecken noch ein paar kleine Highlights. Je nachdem, was Ihr Smartphone unterstützt, können Sie sich an Termine erinnern lassen, auf Siri zugreifen oder noch ganz andere Assistenzsysteme nutzen. Das gibt auf jeden Fall noch einen Extrapunkt.

Mit der Endnote 2,92 behauptet sich dieses Modell im mittleren Bereich. Es hat eine ganz passable Komfortausstattung mit an Bord, die für die typischen Alltagsmomente reicht und ein zufriedenstellendes Hörerlebnis schafft.
