Here we have a conventional hearing aid that is worn behind the ear. It can be used by anyone who wants to compensate for mild, moderate, and even significant hearing needs. The Zircon 2 mini BTE R is a delicate, small hearing aid. Is it worth buying this model? We will reveal the details.
Hearing comfort
Good speech understanding is a given in modern hearing aids. Equally important is hearing comfort. Only when the ratio of speech transmission to the level of background noise is right will hearing be perceived as pleasant. Therefore, let's take a look at the comfort features: In the Zircon 2 mini BTE R, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. Normal ambient sounds like street noise, vacuum cleaner noise, or fan noise are to be dampened by a classic noise suppression. In this Oticon hearing aid, we have to settle for a minimum level of noise suppression.
Unfortunately, an impulse sound suppressor is not included in the Zircon 2 mini BTE R. The device from Oticon can detect wind noise, but only a very slight reduction in noise follows. This is sufficient for normal everyday routes, but true outdoor enthusiasts will not be satisfied with this. There is no support for spatial hearing, so the Zircon 2 mini BTE R cannot convince in this regard. A solid basis for programming the Zircon 2 mini BTE R is provided by the 12 equalizer bands. As sound junkies, we would wish for a few more, but for the typical situations we encounter in our everyday lives, a reasonably good sound profile can already be created from this.
One component in the signal processing of the Zircon 2 mini BTE R is artificial intelligence. The impact is positive, as many customers find conversations in noisy situations to be significantly more relaxed.

It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be deactivated if desired. We really like the small remote controls, and for this model, we found one. This allows for discreet adjustments to the volume or sound.
Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Oticon unfortunately cannot. It would be practical when fingers are not as mobile or if you simply like smart gadgets. Another option to control the hearing aids is a tap control. You simply tap your fingers on your ear, which triggers a specific function. However, this feature is not available in this Oticon device.
The app is definitely very useful. Anyone with a smartphone should download it. Even though the app is not one of our favorites, it is still a helpful addition to the Zircon 2 mini BTE R. One of the best features in the hearing aid is the direct streaming function. This turns the hearing aid into a TrueWireless headphone, receiving phone calls and other sounds directly in the ear. The prerequisite is a compatible smartphone that features 2.4 GHz technology. The biggest advantage is that you can hear phone calls not just in one ear, but in both. Additionally, the sound can be tailored to personal needs.

Simplicity & security
Another point in our checklist is handling. Does everything work simply and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? As far as relaxed listening is concerned, the Zircon 2 mini BTE R is only easy when one is mostly in quiet listening environments. If it gets loud or more challenging, we receive no support from adaptive situational automatics. If anything, one can only help with manual control options. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually raises the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new auditory impressions.
An extremely useful development in recent years, in our opinion, is the integrated rechargeable battery. We are used to recharging electronic devices in our daily lives. And the Zircon 2 mini BTE R is also rechargeable, allowing us to forgo the annoying battery changes.
The Zircon 2 is virtually dust- and waterproof and, with its IP 68 classification, is certainly well protected against external influences.

Extras
Finally, let's briefly check if there are any extras: A special tinnitus program can be programmed into the Zircon 2 mini BTE R upon request. This can generate stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and gladly award extra points.
A significant added benefit is the availability of remote maintenance. Through the app, you can contact your hearing care professional and describe your hearing issue. They can adjust the settings accordingly and upload them to the hearing aids via the app. For people with little time or a long commute, this is a great service.
If Oticon had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, it could even allow for personalized health tracking. However, this is not the case here. These points detract from the Zircon 2 mini BTE R's overall rating. Then there are a few lifestyle functions that turn your hearing aid into a smart assistant. Connect with voice assistants like Siri, or discover what else the app has to offer. While this doesn't relate much to actual hearing, it can be extremely helpful.
