What exactly can the HearLink 3010 BTE PP from the manufacturer Philips do? First of all, it is a conventional hearing aid that sits behind the ear. It caters to both mild and more severe hearing needs. This model is a small hearing aid from a solid mid-range price category. What can it achieve in everyday hearing? What comfort features does it offer? We took a closer look at it.

Hearing comfort

The comfort features determine how pleasant hearing is perceived in everyday life. In this hearing aid, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. A classic noise suppression system is intended to reduce annoying background noises to a tolerable level. The HearLink 3010 BTE PP has a rather simple form of noise suppression that should suffice for normal environments. There is a basic wind noise reduction. Outside, this is quite useful, but it is generally not sufficient for stronger autumn winds.

Sudden loud noises are probably dampened, but we did not really notice the effect. The microphones in the HearLink 3010 BTE PP can be adjusted to face forward in the direction of sight. However, this is the only feature that slightly supports spatial hearing. An important point in our tests is the number of frequency bands. This plays a role when it comes to the precise programming of the hearing aids. It is also crucial for distinguishing between speech and sounds. Here, we have 10 bands. There could certainly have been a few more, as this limits our ability to make finer adjustments. However, those who do not place too much value on a brilliant sound experience might get along quite well with the HearLink 3010 BTE PP.

The signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence has not yet been implemented here.

Operation & connectivity

Almost everyone of us owns a smartphone, which raises the question of whether it can also be connected to the new hearing aid. Let’s take a look at the connectivity and usability of the HearLink 3010 BTE PP. The simplest control option is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This one has that too. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for a step-by-step adjustment of the volume. Or do you need different special programs for your professional daily life or your hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. If you want to keep everything in automatic mode, you can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. Upon request, there is a remote control for the hearing aid. This allows the volume to be adjusted effortlessly. The handling is not only child-friendly; no one will notice that you are currently adjusting your hearing aids.

For some time now, there has been a trend to adjust hearing aids louder or quieter via voice commands. The idea is really good, but Philips is not yet there with this device. Don’t worry, this feature would be nice, but it is not essential. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a quick tap, without needing to press a button. However, this feature is not yet implemented here.

It is very convenient to adjust the hearing aids via the app. There is also a free app for the HearLink 3010 BTE PP. The range of functions is, in our opinion, mediocre, but mostly sufficient. It’s best to try it out in demo mode beforehand. A streaming option would be nice for our digital everyday life. This device meets our wish and comes with a 2.4 GHz wireless module. This allows you to send calls and sounds directly from the smartphone to the hearing aids.

Simplicity & security

Now let's take a look at how the usage in daily life is. Is the handling simple? Do I get a secure device? Unfortunately, there is no powerful automatic situation adjustment in the HearLink 3010 BTE PP. We have to make do with a few standard settings. Active hearing aid users will certainly encounter limits here. Very important in terms of simplicity is the support during the adjustment period. Especially after hearing poorly for years, it can be difficult to perceive everything at a natural volume. In our test device, there is an acclimatization manager that helps us through the adjustment phase with very small volume adjustments. After a few weeks or months, we will have reached the calculated amplification level.

Zinc-air batteries power the HearLink 3010 BTE PP. Changing the battery could become quite cumbersome for people with limited dexterity or vision. If you have concerns about that, it’s better to look for a rechargeable model.

The HearLink 3010 is almost dust and water resistant and, with its IP 68 rating, is certainly well protected against external influences.

Extras

Lastly, we are interested in whether there are any additional goodies on top: For example, a tinnitus option would be interesting. Unfortunately, we did not find a way to alleviate tinnitus in the HearLink 3010 BTE PP.

A real added value is the remote maintenance service. For a change in the hearing aid settings, you no longer have to go to the specialist store, but can directly contact the audiologist through the app. Through a cloud service, you can then upload the new data package to the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.

Many hearing aids still come with a few health functions today. However, since the HearLink 3010 BTE PP does not have any special sensors for this, we cannot present any particular features here. You should take a closer look at the app of this Philips device. It contains a few extras that significantly expand the functionality of these hearing aids. We really think these additional functions are great!

Conclusion: Philips HearLink 3010 BTE PP

This test device finished in the lower rankings and lacks some features. We give it a score of 3.79. For less demanding listeners, this is acceptable, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
