We tested a small hearing aid from the lower mid-range this time. It is the Phonak Audeo Paradise 30 13 T. It is worn behind the ear and is intended for almost every hearing need. The device owes its design to the direct alignment of the speaker in the ear canal, which is why it delivers a nice, clear sound.
Hearing comfort
Good speech understanding is a given in modern hearing aids. Equally important is listening comfort. Only when the ratio of speech transmission to the level of background noise is right, will listening be perceived as pleasant. Therefore, let's take a look at the comfort features: With the Audeo Paradise 30 13 T, we found very few options for comfort adjustment. Normal environmental noises such as street noise, vacuum cleaner sounds, or fan noise should be suppressed by a classic noise cancellation feature. In this Phonak hearing aid, background noise is processed in such a way that relaxed listening is possible.
A filter for rattling or banging noises is not present here – unfortunately, this is a point against it. We searched in vain for wind management, as there is no wind noise suppression here. An adaptive directional microphone helps in separating speech from noise, but we miss a true 3D experience. While the Audeo Paradise 30 13 T doesn't have many adjustable equalizer bands, the 12 should be sufficient for good hearing results.
Signal processing is based on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence has not yet been implemented here.

Operation & connectivity
The controls of hearing aids today are as simple or as complex as anyone would like. The basic functions run fully automatically, of course. We wanted to know how a user can additionally access the Audeo Paradise 30 13 T. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. It can be used to change the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. The use is, of course, optional. A remote control is available for the Audeo Paradise 30 13 T. It is quite practical, fits in the pocket, and offers a volume up-down option as well as various hearing programs.
We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, at this point, we would have liked to see voice control. However, this is currently not available on the Audeo Paradise 30 13 T. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is a tap control. For this, you simply tap your fingers on your ear, which triggers a specific function. But this option is not available in this Phonak device.
Adjusting volume or special functions via an app is already quite common today, and the Audeo Paradise 30 13 T also takes this route and provides us with an app. This app offers far more than just hearing aid functions and makes us speculate what hearing aids could be used for in the future - aside from good hearing. Headphones are no longer needed here, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds directly from the smartphone to the ears – as long as the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

How does one cope with the hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we need to evaluate. Because only when such a device functions easily and uncomplicated can one become accustomed to it. We do not necessarily experience simple, comfortable hearing with the Audeo Paradise 30 13 T. In a quieter daily routine, one can certainly manage, but as soon as you have a varied hearing environment, manual adjustments become unavoidable. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny increments until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually adjust to the new auditory experiences.
Unfortunately, the Audeo Paradise 30 13 T is not equipped with a battery, so you need to regularly use size 13 batteries for operation.
The Audeo Paradise 30 is almost dust and waterproof, and with its IP 68 classification, it is certainly well protected against external influences.

Extras
Finally, let's take a quick look at whether there are any extras: A special tinnitus program can be programmed upon request in the Audeo Paradise 30 13 T. This allows for the generation of stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and are happy to award extra points.
A very good additional benefit is provided by the remote maintenance service. Through the app, you can contact your audiologist and explain your hearing problem. They can adjust the settings accordingly and upload them to the hearing aids via the app. This is a great service for people with little time or a long travel distance.
If Phonak had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, individual health tracking could even be carried out. However, this is not the case here. These points are lost in the evaluation of the Audeo Paradise 30 13 T. It would have been nice to have some lifestyle functions, but they are not available in the Audeo Paradise 30 13 T. Other hearing aids can score points with speech translators or fall alarms, but here it remains within the usual range of functions.
