The Phonak Naida Lumity 50 PR in review

Phonak Infinio Sphere heißt die im August 2024 vorgestellte neue Gerätefamilie aus dem Hause Phonak. Diese Technik erhält daher einen Abschlag in der Gesamtnote.

Today we have a conventional hearing aid called Naida Lumity 50 PR on our test agenda. The manufacturer Phonak has designed it for mild, moderate, and also severe hearing losses and for wearing behind the ear. In terms of price, it is a model from the upper price segment. So, let's take a look:

Hearing comfort

In the first chapter, we assess the quality of noise management. We call this hearing comfort, as these features determine how pleasant the hearing aid wearer perceives the sound of their hearing aids. However, sounds can be of various natures and require very different tools for suppression. In the Naida Lumity 50 PR, a solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional is possible. First, we consider noise suppression. Its purpose is to tame everyday sounds like ventilation or refrigerator noise. In this Phonak model, ambient noise is reliably detected but only moderately reduced.

An impulse sound suppressor is unfortunately not included in the Naida Lumity 50 PR. Wind noise becomes an issue whenever the hearing aid microphones are somewhat exposed. However, this is not a problem with the Naida Lumity 50 PR, as it features intelligent and effective wind noise suppression. This not only softens audible turbulence but also maintains speech understanding. A high number of frequency bands aids in the separation of speech and noise. With its 16 bands, the Naida Lumity 50 PR definitely ranks in the upper tier. An adaptable directional microphone helps separate speech from noise, but we miss a true 3D experience.

Artificial intelligence is also utilized in the signal processing of the Naida Lumity 50 PR. This allows for a much more realistic analysis of the listening environment, and especially the clarity in noisy surroundings is significantly better.

Rating Hearing comfort: 2,8

Operation & connectivity

Basically, the hearing aids work fully automatically, which is also the mode that most people prefer. However, it can be quite useful to switch to another hearing program or simply adjust the volume in a difficult situation. Therefore, let's take a brief look at the operation options of the Naida Lumity 50 PR. A very quick way to correct the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can adjust it to be louder or quieter in several steps. Additional programs for specific hearing situations can also be activated with it. If you want to forgo the button, you can simply have it disabled. Those who don’t like to touch their ear to increase the volume will appreciate the optional remote control. This way, you can comfortably and discreetly make adjustments to the hearing aid.

Voice commands are a fairly new way to operate hearing aids. However, this model does not have this option yet. That's not a big deal – the main thing is that you can hear well. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is a tap control. You simply tap your fingers on your ear, which in turn triggers a specific function. But this feature is not available in this Phonak device.

The operation of the Naida Lumity 50 PR is relatively simple through the associated app. It comes with plenty of additional functions and has impressed us quite a bit. We particularly enjoyed using the equalizer during the test. As a person with normal hearing, one could almost feel envious; you don’t find such features in wireless headphones yet. The Naida Lumity 50 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna, allowing us to enjoy binaural phone calls. This even gives us an advantage over people with normal hearing. We think that’s great and are happy to give it points.

Simplicity & security

Our analysis also addresses the practicality of hearing aids in everyday life. This involves robustness but also special comfort features that aim to make daily use as simple as possible. For us, simplicity in a hearing aid primarily means that it flexibly adapts to changing hearing scenarios. The Naida Lumity 50 PR didn't fully convince us in this regard. While there is a situation recognition feature that differentiates between quieter and louder environments, it works. However, those who are actively engaged in life might occasionally encounter limitations. This isn’t too bad, as one can resort to manual adjustment options. We give a big plus point for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It gradually increases the starting volume in very small steps until my hearing goal is reached. This significantly eases the adjustment to the new sound. A great relief in daily life is the integrated battery. With this, my Naida Lumity 50 PR always has enough energy for the whole day, and I no longer have to worry about the batteries suddenly being empty in the middle of an event. An accumulator system is also very helpful for those with limited dexterity, as it eliminates the need to insert small button cells. The Naida Lumity 50 is virtually dust and water-resistant, and with its IP 68 classification, it is certainly well protected against external influences.

Extras

Before we come to the end, let's take a look at the extras: Phonak has integrated a sound generator that plays soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.

The option for remote adjustment is something we find really great. It is very helpful when you only want to change a small setting on the hearing aid but don't want to drive to the audiologist. Instead, you contact them through the app, and the hearing professional sends a tailored data package back the same way.

Your health is an important topic, which is why Phonak provides its customers with a fantastic feature: health tracking. For example, physical activity is logged over time. Sensors capture this data and then present it graphically in the associated app. There are also a few lifestyle functions that make your hearing aid a smart assistant. Connect with voice assistants like Siri, or discover what else the app has to offer. While it may not have much to do with actual hearing, it can be extremely useful.
