The Phonak Naida Paradise 50 UP in review

Mit der Einführung der Geräten der Phonak Lumity-Familie gelten diese hier als überholt und bekommen eine Abwertung in der Gesamtnote.

The Naida Paradise 50 UP from Phonak is a hearing aid, as you would expect from the past, that is worn behind the ear. The customer receives a normally sized hearing aid from a price level slightly above the average, which can compensate for moderate to severe hearing loss.

Hearing comfort

First, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied daily life? Here with this test device, we found very few options for influencing comfort. As with all hearing aids, we also find the typical noise cancellation here. It is supposed to reduce monotonous, noisy background sounds to the point where they do not dominate as much. With the Naida Paradise 50 UP, the manufacturer has not been stingy and provides us with a multi-stage, effective noise reduction.

We painfully missed wind noise cancellation. Those who are often outdoors might find the clearly audible wind sounds quite disturbing. Unfortunately, we did not find a pop filter that reacts to short, loud noises. The Naida Paradise 50 UP is one of the good hearing aids, at least in terms of the number of frequency bands. With 16 bands, it is well equipped for precise adaptation to personal sound preferences. A normally hearing person doesn't usually think about spatial hearing. With this hearing aid, we do not have to either. A sophisticated system of directional microphones and bilateral wireless networking generates a 3D effect that is very close to natural hearing.

Other hearing aids already use artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but the Naida Paradise 50 UP does not yet incorporate this strategy.

Operation & connectivity

“Can I adjust something on my hearing aid myself?” “Is there perhaps an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when choosing a hearing aid, so let's take a look at the operation and connection options. First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very practical because it is the easiest and quickest way to make changes. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If one prefers not to adjust anything directly at the ear, the button can of course also be disabled. A remote control is available for the Naida Paradise 50 UP. It is quite handy, fits into a pocket, and offers a volume option as well as different hearing programs.

The modern form of operation via voice command is not yet found in the Naida Paradise 50 UP. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple tap on this Phonak model, as it would have required specific sensors in the housing.

Adjusting volume or special functions via an app is already widespread today, and the Naida Paradise 50 UP also takes this route and provides us with an app. This app offers far more than just hearing aid functions and allows us to imagine what hearing aids could be used for in the future—besides good hearing. For our digital everyday life, a streaming option would be nice. The present device fulfills our wish and comes with a 2.4 GHz radio module. With this, you can send phone calls and sounds directly from the smartphone to the hearing aids.

Simplicity & security

Let's continue with the test: How is the user-friendliness? Is it easy or complicated to handle the hearing aid? In terms of automatic situation detection, we had expected a bit more support in everyday hearing. The situations "Quiet" and "Noise" are recognized, but usually, the noise environment is a bit more complex. The adjustment to the new hearing experience is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I don't have to do anything other than wear my hearing aids regularly.

We regret that the Naida Paradise 50 UP does not have a rechargeable battery but is powered by hearing aid batteries size 675. This is not a major issue, but one should remember to carry spare batteries. On the other hand: This hearing aid does not need to be charged daily, and it runs longer on a battery.

We also take a look at the robustness of the housing and discover in the data sheet the protection class IP 68. This prevents dust from penetrating, and water becomes dangerous only after prolonged submersion. Protection against contact is also included.

Extras

Sometimes, hearing aids come with additional features that can be quite useful. Let's see how it is with this Phonak device: A special tinnitus program can be programmed on request in the Naida Paradise 50 UP. This allows for the generation of stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and gladly give extra points.

A very good additional benefit is offered by the remote maintenance service. Through the app, you can contact your audiologist and describe your hearing problem. They can adjust the settings accordingly and upload them to the hearing aids via the app. This is a great service for people with little time or a long commute.

Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Phonak model lacks the sensors required for this service. The functionality of the Naida Paradise 50 UP is limited to normal hearing, which is perfectly fine. Additional features like fall alerts or Siri connections do provide a decent added value but are not relevant for good hearing balance.

Conclusion: Phonak Naida Paradise 50 UP

In the overall results, this test device ranks in the lower positions and lacks some features. We give it a rating of 3.73. This is acceptable for less demanding listeners, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
