The Phonak Naida Lumity 90 UP in review
Phonak Infinio Sphere überholt im August 2024 das Lumity im technischen Bereich. Daher nehmen wir hier eine Abwertung vor.
Today we have a hearing aid, as known from the past, called Naida Lumity 90 UP on our testing agenda. The manufacturer Phonak has designed it for moderate to severe hearing needs and for wearing behind the ear. It is a model from the premium segment in terms of price. So, let's take a look:
Hearing comfort
In our test, we usually start with the analysis of comfort features. A comfortable sound is characterized by a mix of speech and background noise that is realistic and as pleasant as possible. Various electronic tools take care of all the sounds. With the Naida Lumity 90 UP, we were impressed by the excellent sound management. One of the noise tools is noise suppression, which is supposed to dampen things like traffic noise, refrigerator hum, or PC ventilation. Here we find a truly strong noise suppression that makes listening extremely pleasant.
Additionally, we are surprised at how well the impulse sound management works here. Nothing crashes, nothing rattles – very good! Phonak is sure to delight all outdoor fans with this device, as wind is not only pleasantly dampened, but speech understanding should also continue to function without problems. A real highlight of this device is spatial hearing. Recognizing directions, estimating distances – with the Naida Lumity 90 UP, all of this is no problem. With 20 channels, the number of frequency bands in the Naida Lumity 90 UP is very high. This allows the hearing aid to be perfectly tailored to every hearing profile and offers good long-term tuning options.
Speech in noisy environments is always a challenge. Phonak addresses this issue by using artificial intelligence. The result is brilliant and clear speech transmission, while background noises continue to reach the ear at a realistically loud level.

Operation & connectivity
Digital hearing aids have long evolved beyond the normal amplification function. Apps and other control options significantly expand their functionality, which is why we are also looking at this important topic with the Naida Lumity 90 UP from Phonak. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. This allows you to change the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. The use is of course optional. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you are talking to speaks too quietly again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or for driving can also be activated with the remote control. The modern form of operation via voice commands is not yet found in the Naida Lumity 90 UP. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is a tap control. You simply tap your ear with your fingers, which triggers a specific function. However, this possibility is not available in this Phonak device. The operation of the Naida Lumity 90 UP is relatively simple using the associated app. It comes with a lot of additional functions and impressed us quite a bit. We particularly enjoyed using the equalizer in our testing. As someone with normal hearing, you might feel a bit envious; you don't find such features in wireless headphones yet. You don't need headphones anymore here, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds directly from the smartphone to the ears – provided the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

Simplicity & security
In the next step, we want to address the topic of user-friendliness. Is the Naida Lumity 90 UP easy to use? Is it weatherproof? Do you have to do a lot to get accustomed to it? Here are our answers: The Naida Lumity 90 UP performs very well in situation recognition. Anyone looking for a comprehensive and powerful fully automatic hearing aid that requires minimal adjustments will be very satisfied with this. The adaptive algorithms untangle the individual sound events in the environment and present the soundscape clearly and precisely. The device supports the adjustment to the new hearing sensation with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I don't have to do anything other than wear my hearing aids regularly.
We regret that the Naida Lumity 90 UP does not have a rechargeable battery, but is powered by hearing aid batteries size 675. This is not particularly problematic, but one should remember to carry spare batteries. On the other hand: This hearing aid does not need to be charged daily; it runs for a long time on one battery.
We also take a look at the robustness of the casing and find the protection class IP 68 in the data sheet. This means that dust cannot penetrate at all, and water only becomes dangerous after prolonged submersion. There is also protection against contact.

Extras
Now we have looked at the most important features of the hearing aid. But before we come to an end, we want to know if there are a few additional functions: Are you among those suffering from tinnitus? Then you might consider using the optional tinnitus program in the Naida Lumity 90 UP. Soft, gentle sounds are tailored to your hearing and engage all areas of the inner ear. It's nothing more than a distraction technique, and it works surprisingly well. The tinnitus fades into the general noise and does not annoy anymore. This is a simple yet effective tool and earns extra points from us.
The option for remote adjustment is really great. It is very helpful when you just want to change a small detail in the hearing aid settings but don't want to drive to the audiologist. Instead, you can make contact via the app, and the hearing professional sends back a customized data package in the same way.
Special sensors in the Phonak Naida Lumity 90 UP offer brand new insights into your health condition. For example, at the end of the day, you can check how many steps you have taken. By the way, you don't even need to have your smartphone with you while you're on the go. You just need to check the app to read the data. We are really impressed with the additional functions that are included in the Naida Lumity 90 UP. Various assistants support your daily life beyond hearing and can be configured in the app. These are the kind of hearing aids you never want to give up. By the way, these lifestyle functions are often still being worked on, so they may change with updates.
