The Phonak Naida Paradise 90 UP in review

Phonak Lumity haben die Paradise-Plattform abgelöst. Daher gelten diese Geräte nun als überholt und erhalten von uns eine Abwertung in der Gesamtnote.

What exactly can the Naida Paradise 90 UP from the manufacturer Phonak do? First of all, it is a traditional hearing aid that sits behind the ear. It covers a medium to strong hearing requirement. This model is a normally sized hearing aid at the highest quality level. What can it offer in everyday hearing situations? What comfort features does it come with? We took a closer look at that.

Hearing comfort

First, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied everyday life? In this test device, the manufacturer provides the customer with comprehensive noise management. As with all hearing aids, we also find the typical background noise suppression here. It is designed to reduce monotonous, noisy ambient sounds to the point where they are no longer in the foreground. In the Naida Paradise 90 UP, the manufacturer has not been stingy and provides us with a multi-stage, effective noise reduction.

Phonak is sure to appeal to all outdoor enthusiasts with this device, as wind is not only pleasantly dampened, but speech understanding should continue to function without issues. Once you have experienced impulse sound suppression in a hearing aid, you do not want to give it up. The Naida Paradise 90 UP has such a feature and can thus easily handle all brief and intense sound events. This includes, for example, the clinking of dishes in the kitchen or footfall sounds on a hard floor. For a precise, natural listening experience, the number of adjustable frequency bands is of great importance. With 20, this Phonak device is a true top model and allows for differentiated fine-tuning over several years. The spatial hearing in this model is nearly lifelike. A sophisticated directional microphone technology enables good directional listening and creates a true 3D effect.

The signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence is not yet employed here.

Operation & connectivity

Most hearing aids automatically adjust to their surroundings. However, it is sometimes very practical to be able to make changes yourself. After all, the hearing aid does not know how you are currently feeling. We looked at the control options offered by the Naida Paradise 90 UP: A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can adjust it to higher or lower levels in several steps. Additional programs for specific hearing situations can also be activated with it. If you prefer to do without the button, you can simply have it deactivated. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is with the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you are speaking to is too quiet once again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.

We are always excited when a hearing aid surprises us with a great extra feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control here. But this does not exist in the Naida Paradise 90 UP at the moment. Besides buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and the device switches. However, we do not have that here at Phonak, as it would have required specific sensors.

Hearing aid apps are becoming increasingly popular. With the Naida Paradise 90 UP, we are in luck: there is a suitable app. This app completely impressed us. Not only does it offer numerous ways to customize the hearing aids to individual hearing preferences, but the app also provides a wealth of lifestyle features. You no longer need headphones, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds from the smartphone directly to your ears – if the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

The best alternatives to the Naida Paradise 90 UP

Simplicity & security

Another point in our checklist is handling. Does everything work easily and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe application in everyday life? Ideally, the hearing aid should operate largely independently. The performance of the Naida Paradise 90 UP is very good in this regard. It has a lot of typical hearing situations stored, which the device recognizes independently and always generates the appropriate settings. Some people find it difficult to adjust, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is a familiarization manager that gradually introduces us to the required target amplification. The period can last from a few weeks to several months, and this can be set individually. The individual steps are so small that you don’t even notice that there has just been a volume increase.

Unfortunately, the Naida Paradise 90 UP is not equipped with a battery, so you need to regularly use size 675 batteries for operation.

We had a carefree everyday life in our test thanks to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took the hearing aids out with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bathwater or saltwater.

Extras

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find something here: A special tinnitus program can be programmed into the Naida Paradise 90 UP upon request. This allows for stimulating, pleasant sounds to be generated, which can distract from tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and are happy to award extra points.

Phonak is keeping up with the times and offers a forward-looking feature with the remote adjustment service. Working people who have little time can contact their audiologist online and have their hearing aids reprogrammed. Hearing aid users who have a longer commute to the specialist store also benefit from this special service.

Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires special sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately do not have in the Naida Paradise 90 UP. The functionality of the Naida Paradise 90 UP is limited to normal hearing, which is perfectly fine. Additional features like fall alerts or Siri connections provide a decent added value but are not relevant for good hearing balance.
