Phonak offers the Virto Marvel 50 312 NW O, a small hearing aid that is worn in the ear. It is a hearing aid from a price range slightly above average and is suitable for mild to moderate hearing needs. The comfortable and acoustically favorable position in the ear canal ensures that sound reaches the eardrum without loss.

Hearing comfort

The comfort features determine how pleasant everyday listening is perceived. In this hearing aid, we find only the absolute essentials regarding listening comfort. A classic noise reduction aims to reduce annoying background sounds to a tolerable level. The Virto Marvel 50 312 NW O has a reasonably effective noise reduction. Unfortunately, this hearing aid does not yet feature wind noise reduction. Too bad.

Unfortunately, we did not find a blast filter that reacts to short, loud noises. The hearing aid can automatically focus on the speaker across from it, but we do not receive much more support for spatial hearing from the Virto Marvel 50 312 NW O. A few more frequency channels would be desirable, but the existing 12 channels are already quite workable.

Artificial intelligence-based strategies have not yet been implemented in this hearing aid from Phonak.

This hearing aid from Phonak operates with the AudioSense 3.0 operating system. A newer, more powerful version 4.0 of this software is already on the market and works in Phonak Paradise hearing aids.

Operation & connectivity

Almost everyone of us owns a smartphone, so the question arises whether it can be connected to the new hearing aid as well. Let's take a look at how connectivity and usability stand with the Virto Marvel 50 312 NW O. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. This can be used to adjust the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to the customer's wishes. The use is of course optional. A remote control is available for the Virto Marvel 50 312 NW O. It is quite handy, fits into your pocket, and offers a volume option as well as various hearing programs.

The modern form of operation via voice command is not yet found in the Virto Marvel 50 312 NW O. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a simple tap of the finger, without the need to press a button. However, this feature has not yet been implemented here.

An additional app for individual operation would be nice, but it is currently not offered for this hearing aid. Unfortunately, we have to do without a streaming function here and continue to hold the smartphone to our ear normally.

Phonak Virto Marvel 50 312 NW O: When visitors come and you want to listen to all conversations, then the accessory Roger is the right choice to understand all conversation partners at the table. A one-time pairing with the hearing aids is sufficient to activate this table microphone.

Simplicity & security

Now let's take a look at how the usage in everyday life is. Is the handling easy? Do I get a safe device? A well-functioning situation detection already creates a lot of relaxation in daily hearing. One does not have to constantly adjust the device and can effortlessly rely on automated adjustments. The adaptation to the new hearing experience is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I do not have to do anything other than regularly wear my hearing aids.

We regret that the Virto Marvel 50 312 NW O does not have a rechargeable battery, but is powered by hearing aid batteries size 312. This is not a major issue, but one should remember to carry spare batteries. On the other hand, this hearing aid does not need to be charged daily; with one battery, it lasts for a long time.

For a secure everyday feeling, a solid dust and moisture protection is also important. However, there is no IP certification available. Presumably, this model is not really well equipped against invading dust or moisture. This is not up-to-date and warrants a deduction of points.

Finally, let's take a quick look to see if there are any extras available: We noticed the tinnitus option. If desired, one can set up a special tinnitus program. It gently plays soft noise in the ears to distract from the annoying tinnitus a bit. The sounds can be tailored to personal hearing preferences.

A nice feature would be a remote maintenance service to get help from a hearing professional even when one cannot come into the store. Unfortunately, this is not available here, so there are no extra points for that.

Many hearing aids still come with a few health functions today. However, since the Virto Marvel 50 312 NW O does not have any special sensors for this, we cannot present any particular features here. The device from Phonak focuses on essential hearing functions and does not offer extras like voice assistants or translation functions. While that would have been fun, it is not necessary for a good listening experience.
