This time we tested a small, top-class hearing aid. It is the Phonak Virto Marvel 90 312. It is worn in the ear and is intended for mild to moderate hearing needs. The comfortable wearing area at the front of the ear canal entrance is due to its design, which is why it also delivers a nice, clear sound.

Hearing comfort

First, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied everyday life? In this test device, a solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional is possible. As in all hearing aids, we also find the typical background noise suppression here. It is supposed to reduce monotonous, noisy ambient sounds to the point where they no longer take center stage. With the Virto Marvel 90 312, the manufacturer has been generous and provides us with multi-level, effective noise reduction.

We searched in vain for wind management; there is no wind noise reduction here. Impulsive sounds often occur in everyday life. There’s the dishwasher that needs to be unloaded or the keychain that gets placed on the table. The Virto Marvel 90 312 features strong impulse sound management that makes these sounds bearable. Very important for good speech-noise distinction is the number of frequency bands. With 20, this hearing aid is among the best and offers excellent adjustment options. 3D hearing is very important for a natural impression. The device leaves no wishes unfulfilled and impressed us in this respect.

Other hearing aids already use artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but the Virto Marvel 90 312 has not yet adopted this strategy.

“Can I adjust something on my hearing aid myself?” “Is there perhaps an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when choosing a hearing aid, so let's take a look at the control and connection options. For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume, there is a button on the device. You can also select additional programs for special hearing situations through this. We do like the small remote controls, and we have found one for this model. This allows for discreet small changes in volume or sound.

In the test, we found no option for voice control. This function is not necessarily required, but we would have appreciated it. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, a tap control could be conceivable, which would trigger a specific function by tapping the fingers to the ear. However, this option is not available in the Virto Marvel 90 312.

As expected, we find a suitable application for the smartphone. Here we are dealing with a powerful app that trusts its user and provides an extensive toolbox. The Virto Marvel 90 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna and allows us to enjoy binaural phone calls. This even gives us an advantage over normally hearing individuals. We find this good and are happy to award points.

Simplicity & security

Let's continue with the test: How is the user-friendliness? Is it easy or complicated to handle the hearing aid? With its top-notch situational awareness, the Virto Marvel 90 312 has completely convinced us. The hearing aid seamlessly adapts to the acoustic environment and almost never requires our intervention. Hearing feels completely natural. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny increments until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new hearing impressions.

The Virto Marvel 90 312 is not rechargeable. It continues to get its power from disposable batteries size 312, which need to be changed every few days.

Unfortunately, this hearing aid does not have any special protection against penetrating dust or moisture; at least there is no certification that defines the device's durability. It may not be very suitable for an active everyday life.

Extras

At the end of our test report, there is still a bit of space for the extra features: Phonak has integrated a noise generator that plays some soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation. Unfortunately, there is no option for remote adjustment. So if someone needs optimization and wants to change their hearing aid settings, a visit to an acoustic professional is unavoidable. A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors that can track, for example, some personal health data. However, the Virto Marvel 90 312 does not have this feature. Other hearing aids already offer some extended options like a fall alert or reminder functions. We do not find this here, and that is not so dramatic, as the normal hearing functions are still the most important.
