Today we have a traditional hearing aid called Nexia 5 77 DWC on our testing agenda. The manufacturer ReSound designed it for mild to severe hearing loss and for wearing behind the ear. Price-wise, it is a model from the business class. So, let's take a look:

Hearing comfort

Our first test category is hearing comfort. Actually, we could also say sound comfort, as that's primarily what it's about. Does the hearing aid sound very technical or beautifully natural? Are too many background noises amplified, or do they stay relatively well in the background? In this device from ReSound, a solid comfort programming by the audiologist is possible. Noise suppression is a very traditional feature; it filters out all rumbling, uniform sounds from the environment and reduces their loudness. The Nexia 5 77 DWC is not the most powerful variant, but in everyday use, the noise suppression should suffice.

We are happy that the Nexia 5 77 DWC includes wind reduction. Our test discovered impulse sound dampening. It slightly reduces popping, quick sounds. A few more frequency channels would be desirable, but the existing 12 channels are already quite workable. An adaptable directional microphone helps in separating speech from noise, but we miss a true 3D experience.

An exciting topic in audiology is the use of artificial intelligence, but this feature is not yet applied in this ReSound model.

In our test, we discovered the following access options: A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can adjust it louder or quieter in several steps. Additional programs for specific hearing situations can also be activated with it. Anyone who wants to forgo the button can simply have it disabled. The small remote control, which is available as an option, is very practical. For us, it is one of the most convenient ways to turn the hearing aid up or down or switch to another hearing program. No one notices, and there is no need to reach for the ear.

Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from ReSound unfortunately cannot yet. It would be practical for those whose fingers are not as agile anymore or for those who simply like smart gadgets. Tap Control would have also been an interesting feature. With it, you could change the function with a quick tap on the ear. However, this is not yet available in the Nexia 5 77 DWC.

In our opinion, an app is better than a remote control, because everyone likely has a smartphone in their pocket. The app for the Nexia 5 77 DWC is really good, it has a lot of smart features that make hearing in difficult situations much easier. It is quite complex, but you can quickly find your way around. You can practice in demo mode. There are also a few surprising additional tools - have fun discovering! We really enjoyed direct, wireless streaming. This means that phone calls from the smartphone can be transmitted to the hearing aids without any additional accessories. This turns the hearing aid into a perfect hands-free device or a wireless headphone. Listening to music or watching and hearing videos is also incredibly comfortable.

Simplicity & security

Now it should briefly address everyday usability. Is the Nexia 5 77 DWC user-friendly and easy to handle? Does it have water protection? Here are our findings: The Nexia 5 77 DWC is equipped with a solid everyday automatic that is likely sufficient for a quieter life. However, for more complex listening environments, we recommend the additional manual programs. Some people find it difficult to get used to, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is a comfort manager that gradually introduces us to the required target amplification. The period can last a few weeks or even several months; it is individually adjustable. The individual levels are so small that you hardly notice there has been an increase in volume.

A significant relief in everyday life is the integrated battery. This means my Nexia 5 77 DWC always has enough energy for the entire day, and I no longer have to worry about the batteries suddenly dying in the middle of an event. Even with limited dexterity, a battery system is very helpful, as it eliminates the need to insert small button cells.

With IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it can also withstand prolonged immersion in water, and it is protected against contact as well.

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find some here: ReSound has integrated a sound generator that plays soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.

A clever tool is the built-in remote maintenance service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a scarce resource. Therefore, such a remote maintenance service is absolutely appropriate. Those needing a new programming for their hearing aids can easily contact the acoustician through the app and describe their hearing preferences. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send a customized setting as a data package to the app. From there, it is loaded onto the hearing aid and can be tested immediately. This definitely earns extra points in our test.

Many hearing aids today still come with a few health features. However, since the Nexia 5 77 DWC does not have any special sensors for this, we cannot present any particularities here. This ReSound hearing aid does not have any additional lifestyle options onboard. Elsewhere, there are voice assistants or reminder functions, but you don't need those for good hearing. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.
