Our testers have examined another hearing aid from the premium price range. We present: the ReSound Nexia 5 88 DWC. Here we have a conventional hearing aid that is worn behind the ear. It can be used by anyone looking to compensate for moderate, stronger, and fluctuating hearing losses. The Nexia 5 88 DWC is a somewhat discreet hearing aid. Is it worth buying this model? We will reveal the details.

Hearing comfort

Right at the beginning, we address the topic of listening comfort. By this, we mean all the features that ensure a thoroughly pleasant, rich, and disturbance-free sound. In the Nexia 5 88 DWC, a solid comfort programming by the audiologist is possible.

The classic noise suppression is, of course, present here as well. Its task is to recognize simple sounds from the environment and mitigate them somewhat. In this ReSound model, we are not necessarily dealing with a high-performance version, but in most listening situations, the noise suppression should suffice. When clattering or rattling noises occur, the ReSound device activates its impulse sound suppressor. Nevertheless, these noises remain quite intense.

The Nexia 5 88 DWC is also equipped for windy outdoor situations. The signal processing can identify wind and reduce it somewhat. Adaptive microphone systems facilitate spatial hearing. However, one needs to acclimate to the new sound; especially at the beginning, it may not always be entirely clear where a sound is coming from. With 12 frequency bands, a fairly good sound can be adjusted. A passionate musician may not be completely satisfied with this, but for normal hearing and sound needs, this number is more than sufficient. ReSound is not yet working with artificial intelligence in this version.

Would you like to be able to adjust something on your hearing aids yourself? We think it can be quite useful to have some control options. Let's take a look at how it works with the Nexia 5 88 DWC. Typically, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Nexia 5 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button, and can also be disabled upon request. The small remote control, which is available as an option, is very practical. For us, it's one of the easiest ways to increase or decrease the volume of the hearing aid or switch to a different hearing program. No one notices it, and reaching for the ear is unnecessary.

We do not yet find the modern form of control via voice command in the Nexia 5 88 DWC. Another option to control the hearing aids is by tapping. You simply tap your fingers on your ear, which triggers a specific function. However, this feature is not available in this ReSound device.

In our opinion, an app is better than a remote control, as everyone likely has a smartphone in their pocket. The app for the Nexia 5 88 DWC is really good; it has a lot of smart functions that make hearing in difficult situations significantly easier. It's quite complex, but you can navigate it quickly. You can practice in demo mode. There are also a few surprising additional tools – have fun discovering! You no longer need headphones here, as it has a wireless option and can transfer sounds directly from the smartphone to your ears – as long as the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

Simplicity & security

Now let's briefly discuss everyday usability. Is the Nexia 5 88 DWC user-friendly and easy to handle? Does it have water protection? Here are our findings: The integrated situation recognition in the Nexia 5 88 DWC is rated as average. The most important loud and quiet situations are recognized and adapted. However, for acoustically more complex moments, this is not quite sufficient, as one cannot avoid additional manual adjustment options. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when one has been hearing poorly for a long time and then wears a hearing aid for the first time, this is a tremendous relief. The volume does not have to be immediately turned up to maximum. You can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost unnoticed, the amplification approaches the target.

A charger is included with the Nexia 5 88 DWC, as it has built-in batteries. This is contemporary, user-friendly, and is what we expect from a modern hearing aid.

We also take a look at the robustness of the casing and find the protection class IP 68 in the data sheet. This means that dust cannot penetrate at all, and water only becomes dangerous after prolonged immersion. Protection against contact is also included.

As there is increasingly more storage space in apps or the hearing aids themselves, it is worth taking a look at possible extra features. Here's how it looks: We noticed the tinnitus option here. If one wishes, a special tinnitus program can be set up. This applies a gentle noise to the ears if needed to divert attention from the annoying tinnitus. The sounds can be tailored to personal hearing preferences.

A very good additional benefit is provided by the remote maintenance offer. Through the app, one can contact their audiologist and describe their hearing problem. The audiologist can then adjust the settings accordingly and load them into the hearing aids via the app. For people with little time or a long commute, this is a great service.

Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires special sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately do not have in the Nexia 5 88 DWC. It would have been nice to have some lifestyle features, but those are not available in the Nexia 5 88 DWC. Other hearing aids may feature a speech translator or fall alert, but here it remains within the usual range of functions.
