We tested a discrete hearing aid from the low-budget range this time. It is the ReSound Quattro NEO 5 62-DRW. It is worn behind the ear and is designed for nearly every hearing need. The deep placement of the speaker in the ear canal is due to its design, which is why it delivers a nice, clear sound.
Hearing comfort
Hearing aids are not only supposed to bring speech to the ear but also sound pleasant. So let's first look at the comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? Are they dampened or transmitted unchanged? Is the hearing aid suitable for a lively everyday life? Here with this test device, we found only limited options for influencing comfort. As with every hearing aid, it also includes typical noise cancellation. It is designed to reduce uniform, noisy background sounds to the point where they don’t dominate as much. With the Quattro NEO 5 62-DRW, the effectiveness of the noise suppression is slightly above the required minimum. Nevertheless, the noises will still be audible. We found a basic wind detection, but unfortunately, nothing is adjustable. A pulse sound suppressor is unfortunately not included in the Quattro NEO 5 62-DRW. The Quattro NEO 5 62-DRW has 12 adjustable frequency bands, placing it in the mid-range. A good acoustician can certainly extract a reasonable sound from it. An adaptable directional microphone helps in separating speech and noise, but we miss a true 3D experience. An exciting topic in hearing acoustics is the use of artificial intelligence, but this is not yet applied in this ReSound model.

Operation & connectivity
Almost every one of us owns a smartphone, so it raises the question of whether it can be connected to the new hearing aid. Let's see how the connectivity and usability are with the Quattro NEO 5 62-DRW. There is usually a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Quattro NEO 5 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be deactivated if desired. We do like the small remote controls, and we found one for this model. This allows for discreet small changes to the volume or sound.
There has been a trend for some time now to adjust hearing aids louder or quieter using voice commands. The idea is really good, but ReSound is not there yet with this device. Don't worry, this feature would be nice, but it is not essential. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have tap control. This means that you can simply tap your ear lightly, and the device switches modes. However, we don't have that here at ReSound, as it would require specific sensors.
An app is the perfect companion for hearing aids. The app for the Quattro NEO 5 62-DRW is absolutely impressive. It is a useful addition because, in critical hearing situations, it can make life significantly easier with the various adjustment options. We really enjoyed the direct, wireless streaming. This means that calls from the smartphone can be transmitted to the hearing aids without additional accessories. This turns the hearing aid into the perfect hands-free device or wireless headphone. Listening to music or watching and hearing videos is also incredibly comfortable.

Simplicity & security
Another point in our checklist is handling. Is everything easy and reliable? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? The situation recognition did not impress us much. Quiet and loud environments are identified, and the Quattro NEO 5 62-DRW adjusts accordingly. However, as soon as the acoustic conditions become more challenging and different noise sources appear simultaneously, you may need to make some adjustments to the hearing aid yourself. The adaptation to the new hearing experience is supported by a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I do not have to do anything other than regularly wear my hearing aids.
Unfortunately, the Quattro NEO 5 62-DRW is not equipped with a rechargeable battery, so it requires regular size 13 batteries for operation.
We experienced a carefree everyday life in our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took the hearing aids out with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only refers to fresh, natural water and not to soapy bathwater or saltwater.

At the end of our test report, there is still a bit of space for the extra features: We were really pleased with the optional tinnitus program. There are quite a few people who are occasionally or frequently troubled by a ringing or buzzing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the Quattro NEO 5 62-DRW is basically just a sound generator. It aims to produce broadband noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all hearing ranges. The tinnitus becomes submerged in it and is no longer perceived as disturbing.
A clever tool is the integrated remote maintenance service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a precious resource. Therefore, such a remote maintenance service is absolutely appropriate. If someone needs a new programming of their hearing aids, they can easily contact the audiologist via the app and describe their hearing wishes. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send an individual setting as a data package to the app. From there, it is loaded onto the hearing aid and can be tested immediately. This definitely earns extra points in our test.
A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors, which can track a few personal health data, for example. However, the Quattro NEO 5 62-DRW does not offer this. The device from ReSound focuses on essential hearing functions and does not provide extras like voice assistants or translation features. While that might have been fun, it is not necessary for a good listening experience.
