Once again, we focus on a hearing aid from the company ReSound. This time it is a conventional behind-the-ear hearing aid named Quattro NEO 5 77-DWT. It is a discreet hearing aid and is priced in the more affordable category. It can be used for moderate, severe, and fluctuating hearing losses. Let's take a look at what the internals have to offer:
Hearing comfort
First, we evaluate the hearing comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied daily life? Here with this test device, we found very few options for influencing comfort. As in all hearing aids, we also find the typical background noise suppression here. It is supposed to reduce monotonous, noisy background sounds to the point where they are no longer so prominent. With the Quattro NEO 5 77-DWT, we find a rather below-average noise suppression. Noise-sensitive individuals will have to make some compromises regarding hearing comfort.
The device from ReSound can also detect wind noise, but this only results in a very slight reduction in sound. This is sufficient for normal daily routes, but true outdoor enthusiasts will not be satisfied with it. A so-called bang filter would have been nice, as it would have made the clattering when unloading the dishwasher a bit more bearable. However, we have to forgo that with the Quattro NEO 5 77-DWT. While the Quattro NEO 5 77-DWT does not have many adjustable equalizer bands, the 12 available should be sufficient for a good hearing experience. Spatial hearing requires a bit of practice with the Quattro NEO 5 77-DWT. However, the adaptive microphone system provides pretty good support in social settings.
An exciting topic in hearing acoustics is the use of artificial intelligence, but this is not yet applied in this ReSound model.

How can you make the most of the potential of hearing aids in everyday life? We found out what access options are available with the Quattro NEO 5 77-DWT. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. This can be used to change the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed entirely according to the customer's preferences. Of course, using it is optional. A discreet way to adjust the hearing aid is with the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you are talking to speaks too softly, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.
Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from ReSound unfortunately cannot yet. It would be practical for those whose fingers are not as nimble or for those who simply like smart gadgets. Tap Control would also have been an interesting feature. With it, you could change functions with a simple tap on your ear. But that is not available here in the Quattro NEO 5 77-DWT yet.
As expected, we find a suitable application for the smartphone. Here we have a powerful app that trusts its user and provides an extensive toolkit. We really enjoyed the direct, wireless streaming. This means that calls from the smartphone can be transmitted to the hearing aids without any additional accessories. This turns the hearing aid into the perfect hands-free device or wireless headphones. Listening to music or watching videos is also incredibly comfortable.

Of course, we are also interested in how quickly one adapts to the Quattro NEO 5 77-DWT and how easy it is to use on a daily basis. While the automatic situation recognition detects "Quiet" and "Noise," we expected a bit more support in everyday hearing situations, as the sound environment is usually more complex. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. This is a tremendous relief, especially for those who have been hearing poorly for a long time and are using a hearing aid for the first time. The volume does not need to be immediately set to maximum. You can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost unnoticed, the amplification approaches the target level.
The Quattro NEO 5 77-DWT is not rechargeable. It operates with hearing aid batteries size 13. Disadvantage: The batteries are disposed of after use. Advantage: The daily charging of batteries is eliminated, and the hearing aid runs continuously for several days on one battery.
We also take a look at the robustness of the case and find in the data sheet that it has a protection class of IP 68. This means dust cannot penetrate at all, and water only becomes hazardous after prolonged submersion. Protection against contact is also included.

Finally, we want to know if the hearing aid might offer any specials: ReSound has integrated a sound generator that plays soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.
A very good added benefit is the remote maintenance service. Through the app, you can contact your audiologist and describe your hearing issue. They can adjust the settings accordingly and upload them to the hearing aids via the app. For people with little time or a long commute, this is a great service.
Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires special sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately do not have in the Quattro NEO 5 77-DWT. This ReSound hearing aid does not have any additional lifestyle options. Other devices may offer voice assistants or reminder functions, but you don't need that for good hearing. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.
