The ReSound Vivia 4 60S-DRWC in review

The purchase of a hearing aid should be well thought out, as it comes with a considerable price, and one would like to enjoy it for many years. Therefore, we look at various parameters and provide you with the results of our product tests. This test report is about the Vivia 4 60S-DRWC from ReSound. This is a thin, small hearing aid at a reasonable price from the upper mid-range, suitable for mild to severe hearing loss. It is worn behind the ear. By housing the speaker directly in the ear canal, it achieves quite good acoustic sound properties from the outset.

ReSound also relies on proven technology in a very attractive design in its new ReSound Vivia device family.

By the way: Taking a look at the sibling models could be worthwhile. The high-end version "9" in the "60S" form factor (for the test report) includes an additional AI chip. In the video, we show you how the new AI-based noise suppression works and what difference it makes:

Hearing comfort

Hearing aids are designed not only to deliver sound to the ear but also to sound pleasant. So let's first look at the comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? Are they dampened or transmitted unchanged? Is the hearing aid suitable for a lively everyday life? In this test device, a solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional is possible. As in every hearing aid, typical noise reduction is also included here. It aims to reduce consistent, noisy background sounds to the point where they no longer dominate. With the Vivia 4 60S-DRWC, we are not necessarily dealing with a high-performance variant, but in most hearing situations, the noise suppression should be sufficient.

Regarding wind noise suppression, we are dealing with a relatively simple wind damper. When rattling, clattering noises occur, the ReSound device activates its impulse sound suppressor. Nevertheless, these noises remain quite intense. A few more frequency channels would be desirable, but the existing 12 channels work reasonably well. An adaptable directional microphone helps with the separation of speech and noise, but we lack a true 3D experience.

The signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence is not yet utilized here.

The automatic directional processing intelligently adjusts the microphones of both hearing aids to optimally capture speech and sounds. It is based on the natural sound processing in the brain and provides a realistic listening experience with tailored microphone settings. Thanks to the data exchange between both hearing aids, the best speech signal is highlighted without impairing the perception of the surroundings – for effortless, clear hearing in any situation.

Operation & connectivity

Would you like to adjust something on your hearing aids yourself? We believe it can be quite useful to have one or two control options available. Let’s take a look at how it is with the Vivia 4 60S-DRWC. A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can adjust the volume in several levels, either louder or quieter. Additionally, extra programs for special hearing situations can be activated with it. If you prefer to do without the button, you can simply have it deactivated. A remote control for the hearing aid is available upon request, making it easy to adjust the volume effortlessly. The operation is not only child’s play, but no one will notice that you are currently adjusting your hearing aids.

We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. But that is not available in the Vivia 4 60S-DRWC at this time. With the sensor technology, ReSound is taking an innovative approach and opening up entirely new possibilities. For instance, there is a tap control for the Vivia 4 60S-DRWC. Just tap briefly yet noticeably with your flat hand or a few fingers on your ear shell. The hearing aid can then perform a specific function, such as switching to a special setting. Your audiologist can configure this according to your preferences.

Apps for hearing aids are widely available today. This one for the Vivia 4 60S-DRWC has awakened our playful side. It’s fun to use this app as it expands the functionality of the hearing aid with some very useful tools. You no longer need headphones here, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds from the smartphone directly into your ears – provided the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

The ReSound Smart 3D app now offers an Auracast assistant, which allows your smartphone to be used as a receiver for audio signals – even if it doesn't natively support Auracast. An icon on the home screen takes you directly to the overview of available sources. With just a tap, you can connect and benefit from the new connectivity.

Simplicity & security

Our analysis also addresses the everyday practicality of hearing aids. This involves robustness, but also special comfort features that aim to make daily use as simple as possible. We categorize the situation recognition integrated into the Vivia 4 60S-DRWC as more in the middle range. The most important loud and quiet situations are recognized and adapted. However, for acoustically more complex moments, this is not entirely sufficient, as one cannot avoid additional manual adjustment options. The adjustment to the new hearing experience is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I don’t have to do anything other than wear my hearing aids regularly.

The Vivia 4 60S-DRWC is rechargeable and no longer requires hearing aid batteries. This is environmentally friendly, as there are no old batteries to dispose of. At the same time, it is extremely convenient since there is no need to carry spare batteries. The hearing aids simply go into the charging station in the evening and are ready for use the next morning.

With an IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse conditions. Dust cannot penetrate, it withstands longer immersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

ReSound offers two battery chargers that make everyday life easier with rechargeable hearing aids. The premium charging station features a built-in power bank, allowing the hearing aids to be charged up to three times while on the go—perfect for traveling or long days without a power outlet. The desktop charger is a stationary solution with fast charging time and secure placement, ideal for daily use at home. Both variants ensure reliable power supply and maximum comfort.

ReSound: Charging station with hearing aids

ReSound Vivia 4 60S-DRWC: The premium charging cradle is the ideal companion for those who are often on the go. Thanks to the integrated power bank, the RIC hearing systems can be fully charged up to three times – anytime and anywhere. Practical LED indicators on the front and back provide information about the charging status of the hearing systems and the charging cradle. The magnetically closing lid ensures safe protection, keeping the hearing systems well stored at all times. Perfect for a worry-free listening experience on the move!

Extras

We all like goodies, so let's take a final look at the extras that may be hidden in the hearing aid. ReSound has integrated a sound generator that plays soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can help distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.

A very good additional benefit comes from the remote maintenance service. Through the app, one can contact their audiologist and describe their hearing problem. The audiologist can then adjust the settings accordingly and upload them to the hearing aids via the app. For people with little time or a long commute, this is a great service.

A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors, which can track personal health data, for example. However, the Vivia 4 60S-DRWC does not offer this. The functionality of the Vivia 4 60S-DRWC is limited to normal hearing, which is perfectly fine. Additional features like fall alerts or Siri integrations provide some added value but are not relevant for achieving good hearing balance.

With the newly introduced interchangeable microphone filters from ReSound, you can enjoy clear and reliable sound quality at all times. The filters protect your hearing aids from dust, dirt, and moisture, preventing interference and extending their lifespan. You can easily change the filter yourself – quickly, straightforward, and without a visit to the dealer. This saves you time, avoids maintenance costs, and ensures that your hearing aids always function optimally.
