The ReSound Vivia 9 61-DRW in review

In the jungle of hearing aid variants, we would like to provide you with some orientation and present another test report. Today's focus is on a ReSound model, specifically the Vivia 9 61-DRW. The amplification performance is sufficient for mild, moderate, and even severe hearing loss, and just by the position of the speakers in the ear canal, close to the eardrum, it has a quite reasonable sound. The Vivia 9 61-DRW is a small, barely visible hearing aid from the highest quality segment. It is worn behind the ear.

In the premium class of the ReSound Vivia, the proven Nexia chip has been enhanced with a targeted Clear-Focus.

Hearing comfort

In our test, we typically start with the analysis of comfort features. A comfortable sound is characterized by a mix of speech and ambient noise that is realistic and as pleasant as possible. Various electronic tools take care of all the sounds. With the Vivia 9 61-DRW, the manufacturer provides the customer with comprehensive noise management. One of the noise tools is noise suppression, which is intended to dampen sounds such as traffic noise, refrigerator humming, or PC ventilation. Here we find truly effective noise suppression that makes listening extremely pleasant.

We are pleased to find good and efficient impulse sound damping here. It is definitely useful in everyday life, as it noticeably absorbs the slamming of doors, clattering dishes, or similarly clanging noises. This device has really good wind management, making outdoor stays enjoyable. Spatial listening in this model is nearly natural. A sophisticated directional microphone technology allows for good directional hearing and creates a genuine 3D effect. With 17 frequency channels, the Vivia 9 61-DRW clearly belongs to the better devices and allows for individual, well-sounding programming.

Other hearing aids are already using artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but the Vivia 9 61-DRW has not yet adopted this strategy.

These hearing aids adapt in real time to your surroundings, ensuring that you understand speech clearly without having to sacrifice natural background sounds. Thanks to intelligent microphone control, you experience a balanced listening experience at all times, automatically adjusting to different situations. Special technologies preserve spatial perception, allowing you to effortlessly capture everything around you. Without manual adjustments, the hearing aids seamlessly switch between different listening modes, providing you with a natural, brilliant sound – for relaxed listening in any situation.

Operation & connectivity

Digital hearing aids have long evolved beyond the normal amplification function. Apps and other operating options significantly expand the functionality, which is why we will also look at this important topic with the Vivia 9 61-DRW from ReSound. First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very sensible, as it is the simplest and fastest way to make changes. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If one prefers not to adjust anything directly at the ear, the button can of course be deactivated. We do like little remote controls, and we found one for this model. This allows for discreet adjustments to the volume or sound. In the test, we found no option for voice control. This function is not necessarily required, but we would have appreciated it nonetheless. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple tap of the finger in this ReSound model, as specific sensors in the housing would have been needed for that. We always have our smartphones with us, and with the Vivia 9 61-DRW, it's worth it because it can be personalized via an app. The app is also a lot of fun and has a functionality that you wouldn't expect in a hearing aid app. If you enjoy playing, this is the right place for you. You no longer need headphones, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds directly from the smartphone into the ears — provided the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

The free ReSound Smart 3D app now features an integrated Auracast assistant. This turns your smartphone into a versatile receiver – even if it originally does not support Auracast. The usage is straightforward: An icon on the home screen takes you directly to the assistant, which displays a list of all available audio sources. With just one click, you can connect and benefit from the new, improved connectivity.

ReSound: TV Streamer

ReSound Vivia 9 61-DRW: The TV Streamer+ provides a crystal-clear television experience by transmitting sound directly to your hearing aids. Its compact design allows it to be discreetly placed behind the television. With the ReSound Smart 3D app, you can customize the sound to your liking or start a public Auracast stream – for relaxed listening without distractions.

The best alternatives to the Vivia 9 61-DRW

Simplicity & security

To continue taking the perspective of hearing aid users, we naturally also need a test of everyday suitability. Here's what we found: With top-notch situation recognition, the Vivia 9 61-DRW has completely convinced us. The hearing aid adapts seamlessly to the acoustic environment and almost never requires our intervention. Hearing feels completely normal. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when someone has been hearing poorly for a long time and then wears a hearing aid for the first time, this is a tremendous relief. The volume doesn’t need to be turned up all at once. You can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost imperceptibly, the amplification approaches the desired level.

Many hearing aids today have a rechargeable battery, but the Vivia 9 61-DRW still operates with disposable batteries. This is somewhat inconvenient to handle and also burdens the environment.

The data sheet certifies the ReSound device with an IP protection class rating of 68. As such, it is one of the most resilient hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water does not penetrate the housing as long as it is not submerged deeper than 1.5 meters. Still, be careful. Shampoo, for example, alters the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. However, in everyday life, you can behave quite carefree.

Extras

We complete the test by looking for a few extras for you: Worth mentioning is the tinnitus program. Those plagued by annoying ear noises will benefit from it. Pleasant, soft sounds are adjusted to gently surround the tinnitus. In the end, the tinnitus blends into the ambient noise and becomes hardly noticeable.

ReSound is keeping up with the times and offers a future-oriented feature with the remote adjustment service. Working individuals with little time can contact their audiologist online and have their hearing aids reprogrammed. Hearing aid users who have a longer commute to the specialty store also benefit from this special service.

Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires special sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately do not have in the Vivia 9 61-DRW. The hearing aid does not include additional functions such as special assistance systems, a fall alarm, or language translators. This is not a big deal, as it has no impact on the important hearing functions.

ReSound makes it easier for you to care for your hearing aids with the new replaceable microphone filters. They prevent interference from dust and moisture, ensuring consistently clear sound. The change is effortless to do yourself – saving you time, avoiding unnecessary costs, and maintaining full control over your listening experience.
