The Signia Intuis M 4.1 HdO in review

What exactly can the Intuis M 4.1 HdO from the manufacturer Signia do? First of all, it is a conventional hearing aid that sits behind the ear. It covers moderate, more severe, and changing hearing losses. This model is a small hearing aid from the more affordable category. What can it achieve in everyday hearing? What comfort features does it offer? We took a closer look at it.
Hearing comfort
Good speech understanding is a given in modern hearing aids. Hearing comfort is just as important. Only when the ratio of speech transmission to the level of background noise is right can hearing be perceived as pleasant. That's why we take a look at the comfort features: In the Intuis M 4.1 BTE, we find only the bare essentials regarding hearing comfort. Normal background noises like street noise, vacuum cleaner sounds, or fan noises are supposed to be dampened by classic noise suppression. This Signia hearing aid does have a very basic noise suppression system, but it only provides very light attenuation.
Unfortunately, we did not find a noise filter that responds to short, loud sounds. When the wind sweeps over the microphones outdoors, we wish for wind noise reduction. However, this is missing here, and in some outdoor situations, it can significantly impact hearing comfort. We lack natural spatial hearing with this device, which indeed poses some difficulties in everyday life. Directions can no longer be reliably identified. Anyone with limited vision should consider choosing a different hearing aid. The number of equalizer bands is very important for adapting to hearing needs. The BTE only offers us 8 and does not allow for many fine-tuning options in the long term.
An exciting topic in audiology is the use of artificial intelligence, but this Signia model does not currently apply it.

Operation & connectivity
Buttons, switches ... or would you prefer an app? Control elements can significantly expand the functionality of hearing aids. Is there something like this in the Intuis M 4.1 BTE? We checked. Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Intuis M 4.1. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button, and it can also be disabled if desired. A remote control is available for the Intuis M 4.1 BTE. It's quite handy, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume option as well as different hearing programs.
We always appreciate when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For instance, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. However, it is currently not available in the Intuis M 4.1 BTE. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, a tap control could be conceivable, which would trigger a specific function by tapping the ear with your fingers. However, this option is not available in the Intuis M 4.1 BTE.
A suitable app is also provided to us. In everyday life, the app should suffice, but it doesn't offer much more than a volume function and accessing various hearing programs. The Intuis M 4.1 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna and allows us to enjoy phone calls in both ears. This even gives us an advantage over normal hearing individuals. We think that's great and are happy to give points for it.

Simplicity & security
We continue the test with a brief assessment of how easy everyday use will be. Is it complicated? Do I have to pay special attention? Or do I not have to consider anything further? We receive relatively little support from the automatic program features in the Intuis M 4.1 HdO. Without a few individual hearing programs, one will likely struggle in a lively everyday life. We give a big plus point for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It gradually increases the starting volume in very small steps until my hearing goal is reached. This significantly eases the adjustment to the new sound.
We regret that the Intuis M 4.1 HdO does not have a rechargeable battery but operates with size 13 hearing aid batteries. This is not particularly problematic, but one should remember to carry spare batteries. On the other hand: This hearing aid does not need to be charged daily; it runs for a longer time on a single battery.
We had a carefree everyday experience in our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and afterwards took out the hearing aids with wet hands – no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to soapy bathwater or saltwater.

Extras
We are almost at the end, but perhaps this device still has a few gifts in the form of extra features? Let's take a look: First, we will check for a special tinnitus program. Tinnitus is a bothersome topic for many people. However, we did not find an option for tinnitus relief in the Intuis M 4.1 HdO.
We find the remote maintenance service interesting, which can be utilized. If one does not have the opportunity to visit the hearing acoustician, they can contact them instead via the app, briefly describe their hearing problem, and then receive a data package with a new hearing aid configuration. If it sounds good, they can load it into their hearing aids.
There are no sensors in this Intuis M 4.1 variant, so the popular health tracking cannot be offered. For example, steps taken throughout the day are counted. As mentioned, this hearing aid does not have this feature onboard. It would have also been nice to have some lifestyle functions, but these are not available in the Intuis M 4.1 HdO. Other hearing aids can score points with features such as a speech translator or fall alert, but here it remains with the usual range of functions.
Rating Extras: 3,3
Conclusion: Signia Intuis M 4.1 HdO
In the overall result, this test device ranks in the lower positions and is lacking some features. We give it a score of 4.36. For undemanding listeners, this is acceptable, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
