The Signia Pure 5 AX 312 in review

Dieses Hörgerät gehört bereits zur älteren Generation und wurde von Signia IX abgelöst. Aus diesem Grund haben wir die Gesamtnote herabgestuft.

We tested a small hearing aid from the upper price segment this time. It is the Signia Pure 5 AX 312. It is worn behind the ear and is designed for mild, moderate, and even severe hearing loss. The device owes its shape to the direct orientation of the speaker into the ear canal, which is why it delivers a nice, clear sound.

Hearing comfort

At least as important as speech understanding is hearing comfort. After all, our environment should sound as realistic and pleasant as possible. So let's take a look at sound management: In this model, which Signia offers here, the manufacturer provides the customer with comprehensive sound management. Of course, noise suppression is integrated to mitigate tiring background noises. In the Pure 5 AX 312, ambient noise is processed in a way that allows for relaxed listening. The Pure 5 AX 312 impresses us with its wind noise reduction and performs well in that regard.

Short and sharp sounds are usually annoying, but here in this model, there is an adjustable impulse sound control. This makes sounds like cutlery clattering, slamming drawers, or rustling newspapers feel less unpleasant. We are satisfied with the spatial functions. The hearing aid features adaptive microphones that support spatial hearing very well. 16 adjustable equalizer bands provide enough flexibility to create a reliable, tailored listening experience.

Sometimes, the audiologist is just not nearby when a hearing problem arises. The Pure 5 AX 312 helps you with its app, as there is a special assistant that uses artificial intelligence to make precise adjustments to your hearing moment.

Operation & connectivity

“Can I adjust something on my hearing aid myself?” “Is there perhaps an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when choosing a hearing aid, so let's take a look at the control and connection options. Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Pure 5 AX as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be disabled if desired. The small remote control, which is available as an option, is very practical. For us, it is one of the most convenient ways to turn the hearing aid up or down or switch to another hearing program. No one notices it; reaching for the ear is not necessary.

In our testing, we did not find a voice control option. This feature is not necessarily required, but we would have appreciated it nonetheless. Besides buttons or remotes, some hearing aids also have a tap control. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and the device switches. However, we did not find this feature at Signia; it would have required specific sensors.

Adjusting volume or special functions via an app is already quite common today, and the Pure 5 AX 312 also follows this trend by providing us with an app. This app offers much more than just hearing aid functions and gives us a glimpse of what hearing aids could be used for in the future - aside from good hearing. Problems with phone calls on a smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Calls, music, and other sounds are completely transmitted wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls as well as for listening to music while exercising. Everything worked easily and smoothly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is required.

Simplicity & security

Of course, we are also interested in how quickly one gets used to the Pure 5 AX 312 and how easy it is to use on a daily basis. A well-functioning situational awareness creates a lot of relaxation in everyday hearing. You don't have to constantly switch the device and can easily give in to the automated adjustments. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can calmly and gradually get used to the new hearing impressions.

The 312 from Pure 5 AX is powered by 312 disposable batteries and is not rechargeable. This has its pros and cons. For the decision of "battery or rechargeable," we have provided a guide here: Rechargeable hearing aids or batteries: 6 criteria for your decision.

The data sheet certifies the Signia device with an IP protection class 68. This makes it one of the most robust hearing aids on the market. Dust doesn't stand a chance, and water cannot penetrate the housing as long as it doesn't submerge deeper than 1.5 meters. However, be cautious. For example, shampoo changes the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. In everyday life, however, you can behave quite carefree.

Extras

Finally, we want to know if the hearing aid offers any specials: Worth mentioning is the tinnitus program. This will benefit all those who are troubled by annoying ear noises. Pleasant, soft sounds are adjusted to gently surround the tinnitus. In the end, the tinnitus fades into the background noise and is no longer disruptive at all.

The possibility of remote adjustment is something we really like. It is very helpful whenever you just want to make a small change to the hearing aid settings but don't want to drive to the hearing care professional. Instead, you can make contact through the app, and the hearing expert sends an adjusted data package back the same way.

Special sensors in the Signia Pure 5 AX 312 offer brand new insights into your health status. For example, you can check how many steps you've taken at the end of the day. By the way, you don’t even need to have your smartphone with you on the go. You only need to look at the app to read the data. This Signia hearing aid does not have any other lifestyle options on board. Elsewhere, there are voice assistants or reminder functions, but you don’t need that for good hearing. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.
