We tested a small hearing aid this time with a very slim design from the upper price segment. It is the Signia Silk 3 IX charge&go. It is worn in the ear and is intended for mild to moderate hearing loss. The device owes its natural, cleverly chosen fit directly in the ear canal to its design, which is why it also provides a nice, clear sound.
Hearing comfort
One of our favorite chapters is hearing comfort, as it addresses one of the most important topics in conversations with our customers: background noise. Everyone would preferably only hear speech and block out all other sounds. However, it's not that simple. Without noise, our lives would sound very thin and empty. That’s why hearing aids are designed to keep sounds at bay but not eliminate them entirely.
The Silk 3 IX charge&go allows for solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional. The mandatory noise reduction is supposed to kick in for anything that has a somewhat consistent rumble, such as heating systems or exhaust hoods. In this device, that works quite well. In a normal hearing environment, it can certainly handle that.
The Silk 3 IX charge&go is also equipped for windy outdoor situations. The signal processing can identify wind and reduce it a bit. An impulse sound reducer for short, sharp noises is sensibly integrated here and is perfectly sufficient for everyday use. The special design of the Silk 3 IX charge&go proves to be a stroke of luck when it comes to spatial hearing. The microphones are positioned deep in the ear canal, and that is precisely where sound reaches normally hearing individuals. Therefore, spatial hearing does not need to be artificially recreated; it occurs naturally. 16 adjustable equalizer bands provide enough room to generate a reliable, customized hearing experience.
Sometimes we encounter hearing aids that successfully process data using artificial intelligence, but this device has not reached that point yet.

Operation & connectivity
Sometimes it is not so bad if you can slightly adjust the volume of the hearing aid, for example, when the neighbor is loudly mowing the lawn or someone is speaking to you very quietly. Many models have special control functions for this reason. You can use them, but you don't have to. We looked at this with the Silk 3 IX charge&go: Often there is a button on the hearing aid, but we did not find it on this model. Sometimes this control element is omitted in favor of a smaller design. That's not so dramatic, because most functions in the hearing aid operate automatically anyway. The small remote control, which is available as an option, is very practical. For us, it is one of the most convenient ways to increase or decrease the volume of the hearing aid or switch to another hearing program. No one notices it, reaching for the ear is not necessary.
The modern form of voice command control is not yet found in the Silk 3 IX charge&go. Another option to control the hearing aids is a tap control. You simply tap your fingers on your ear, which triggers a specific function. However, this possibility is not available in this Signia device.
The almost standard smartphone app is also available for the Silk 3 IX charge&go. However, do not expect too much. There is a volume function and a program option, and then it unfortunately stops there. The smartphone cannot connect to the hearing aid, as it unfortunately lacks the necessary equipment with a wireless antenna.

Simplicity & security
We continue the test with a brief assessment of how easy everyday use will be. Is it complicated? Do I have to be especially careful? Or do I not have to pay attention to anything else? When it comes to simplicity, it is primarily about easy, effortless listening. This works quite well with the existing automatic situational adjustments in the Silk 3 IX charge&go. However, when the acoustic environment becomes a bit more varied, the automation reaches its limits, and we prefer to rely on manual adjustment options. The adaptation to the new hearing experience is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I don't have to do anything more than wear my hearing aids regularly.
The Silk 3 IX charge&go is rechargeable and no longer requires hearing aid batteries. This is environmentally friendly, as there are no old batteries to dispose of. At the same time, it is also extremely convenient, as no spare batteries need to be carried. The hearing aids simply go into the charging station in the evening and are ready for use the next morning.
The hearing aid has been rated to IP protection class 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust ingress. Water cannot easily damage the hearing aid either. Thus, it is well-equipped for outdoor activities where it can get wet and dirty. However, it is still advisable not to bathe or swim with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can alter the composition and ultimately cause damage.

Sometimes, there are additional features in hearing aids that can be quite useful. Let's see how this Signia device measures up: Signia has integrated a noise generator that plays a few soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can help distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.
An online contact with the audiologist through the app would be very helpful. This is already quite common today and helps with minor adjustment issues. Unfortunately, Signia forgoes this and therefore doesn't earn any extra points.
A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors that can track a few personal health data, for example. However, the Silk 3 IX charge&go does not offer this. This Signia hearing aid has no additional lifestyle options on board. Elsewhere, there are voice assistants or reminder functions, but you don't need that for good hearing. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.
