The Evolv AI 1000 HdO R from Starkey is a traditional hearing aid that is worn behind the ear. The customer receives a small hearing aid from the more affordable price range, which can compensate for both mild and more severe hearing needs.
Hearing comfort
The hearing comfort determines whether someone enjoys wearing their hearing aids or not. That’s why we first looked at how the hearing aid deals with background noise. For this model, which Starkey presents to us, we found very few options for influencing comfort. Of course, noise suppression is integrated to mitigate exhausting background sounds. In the Evolv AI 1000 RIC, we have a fairly simple form of noise suppression that should be sufficient for normal environments. When it comes to wind noise suppression, we have a relatively simple wind damper.
Our test discovered impulse noise reduction. It dampens snapping, quickly occurring sounds a little. The microphones in the Evolv AI 1000 RIC can be directed forward in the direction of sight. However, this is the only feature that slightly supports spatial hearing. With 10 frequency bands, we are not completely satisfied with the RIC, but for uncomplicated hearing curves, it should suffice. The sound likely won't be entirely natural.
Interestingly, artificial intelligence also plays a role here in signal processing. Sound is thus analyzed not only based on typical frequency patterns. Especially intense, noisy situations are perceived as more realistic and pleasant.

“Can I make adjustments on my hearing aid myself?” “Is there perhaps an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when choosing a hearing aid, so let’s take a look at the control and connection options. The simplest control option is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This one has that as well. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for a stepwise adjustment of the volume. Or do you need different special programs for your professional everyday life or your hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. If you prefer to leave everything in automatic mode, you can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. Those who don't like to touch their ear to adjust the volume will appreciate the optional remote control. This allows for convenient and discreet adjustments to the hearing aid.
Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Starkey unfortunately cannot yet. It would be practical if the fingers don't move as easily anymore or if you just like smart gadgets. During testing, we were quite impressed with the Tap control. Just tap your ear quickly, and your Starkey hearing aid knows it needs to do something. We were already familiar with this sensor-controlled technology from wireless headphones, and it’s great that there is now something like this in hearing aids too.
As is common today, we also find a smartphone app for the Evolv AI 1000 HdO R. This app includes solid basic functions and adds a few extras. The Evolv AI 1000 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna and allows us to enjoy binaural phone calls. This even gives us an advantage over normal hearing individuals. We find that great and are happy to give it points.

Continuing with the test: How does it perform in terms of user-friendliness? Is it easy or complicated to handle the hearing aid? The situational recognition did not impress us much. Quiet and loud environments are identified, and the Evolv AI 1000 HdO R adjusts accordingly. But as soon as the acoustic conditions become more challenging and various noise sources appear simultaneously, you may need to make some manual adjustments to the hearing aid. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially for those who have been hearing poorly for a long time and then wear a hearing aid for the first time, this is an enormous relief. The volume does not need to be fully raised immediately. You can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost unnoticed, the amplification approaches the target.
A significant relief in daily life is the integrated battery. With it, my Evolv AI 1000 HdO R always has enough energy for the entire day, and I no longer have to worry that the batteries will suddenly run out in the middle of an event. Additionally, for those with limited dexterity, a battery system is very helpful because it eliminates the need to insert small button cells.
We had an carefree daily life during our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took the hearing aids out with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bathwater or saltwater.

Es gibt doch relativ viele Menschen, die gelegentlich oder häufig von einem Pfeifen oder Rauschen im Ohr geplagt sind. Das Tinnitusprogramm im Evolv AI 1000 HdO R ist eigentlich nichts weiter als ein Klanggenerator. Es geht darum, breitbandige Geräusche oder Klänge zu erzeugen, die sanft und angenehm alle Hörbereiche stimulieren. Der Tinnitus geht darin unter und wird nicht mehr als störend wahrgenommen.
Die Möglichkeit zur Ferneinstellung finden wir richtig gut. Die ist immer dann sehr hilfreich, wenn man nur eine Kleinigkeit an der Hörgerät-Einstellung verändert haben möchte, aber nicht extra zum Hörakustiker fahren will. Den Kontakt nimmt man stattdessen über die App auf, und der Hörprofi schickt ein angepasstes Datenpaket auf dem gleichen Weg zurück.
Spezielle Sensoren im Starkey Evolv AI 1000 HdO R bieten ganz neue Einblicke in Ihren Gesundheitszustand. So können Sie z.B. am Ende eines Tages schauen, wieviele Schritte Sie gegangen sind.
