The Unitron Ativo RIC in review
Are you curious about this hearing aid from Unitron? Let's see what we have found out. The Ativo RIC is designed for light, moderate, and severe hearing needs and is worn behind the ear. It is a small hearing aid from the more affordable category.
Due to the speaker arrangement discreetly in the ear towards the eardrum, we have a good, clear sound.
Hearing comfort
In the first chapter, we evaluate the quality of sound management. We call this hearing comfort because these features determine how pleasant the hearing aid wearer perceives the sound of their hearing aids. However, noises can be of various natures and require very different tools for suppression. In the Ativo RIC, we find only the absolute necessities regarding hearing comfort. First, we look at noise suppression. This is meant to tame everyday sounds like the noise of ventilation or a refrigerator. This Unitron model only includes a very slight noise reduction.
Impact sounds are likely cushioned, but we did not notice the effect. We searched in vain for wind management; there is no wind noise reduction here. Although the Ativo RIC does not have many adjustable equalizer bands, the 12 should suffice for a good listening experience. Unfortunately, nothing can be said here about spatial hearing, as the microphones have no additional functions that could enhance directional hearing.
Sometimes we encounter hearing aids that successfully process data using artificial intelligence, but that is not the case with this device yet.

Operation & connectivity
Digital hearing aids have long evolved beyond the normal amplification function. Apps and other control options significantly expand the range of features, which is why we are also looking at this important topic with the Ativo RIC from Unitron. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. With it, you can adjust the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. The use of it is, of course, optional. A remote control is available for the Ativo RIC. It's quite practical, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume up and down option as well as various hearing programs.
Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Unitron unfortunately cannot yet. This would be handy when fingers are not as agile or when someone simply likes smart gadgets. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control feature. This means you can just tap your ear briefly, and the device switches modes. However, we do not have this at Unitron; it would have required specific sensors.
Manual operation includes an app. This allows for unobtrusive access to the hearing aid. In addition to volume control, you can also adjust hearing programs and a few other functions. Problems with phone calls on a smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are transmitted completely wirelessly into the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls and while listening to music during sports. Everything worked smoothly and easily. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is needed.

Simplicity & security
How do you manage with the hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we will evaluate. Only when such a device works easily and straightforwardly can you become accustomed to it. Unfortunately, Ativo RIC cannot provide automatic situation detection, and we have to make manual adjustments to hear well in different acoustic situations. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new auditory impressions.
Ativo RIC relies on battery power instead of rechargeable batteries. Advantage: Very long runtime with a battery. Unlike rechargeable solutions, you only need to worry about the power supply very rarely. Disadvantage: There is waste in the form of used batteries. This hearing aid uses a hearing aid battery of size 312.
The data sheet certifies the Unitron device with an IP protection class rating of 68. This makes it one of the most robust hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water does not penetrate the housing, as long as it does not submerge deeper than 1.5 m. Nevertheless, be careful. Shampoo, for example, changes the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. However, in everyday life, you can behave completely carefree.

Extras
Sometimes, hearing aids come with additional features that can be quite useful. Let's see how it is with this Unitron device: First, we look for a special tinnitus program. Ear noise is a troubling issue for many people. However, we did not find an option for tinnitus relief in the Ativo RIC.
A real added value is provided by the remote maintenance service. For changes to the hearing aid settings, you no longer need to go to the specialist store; instead, you can directly contact the audiologist through the app. Through a cloud service, you can then upload the new data package to the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.
Many hearing aids still come with a few health functions today. However, since the Ativo RIC does not have any special sensors for this, we cannot present any unique features here. The functionality of the Ativo RIC is limited to normal hearing, which is perfectly fine. Additional features such as fall alerts or Siri connections do offer some substantial benefits but are not relevant for good hearing balance.
Rating Extras: 3,3
Conclusion: Unitron Ativo RIC
In the overall result, this test device ranks in the lower positions and lacks some features. We give it a rating of 3.5. This is acceptable for undemanding listeners, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
