The Unitron B Stride 5 UP in review

Die Blu-Technik wurde mit der Unitron Vivante verbessert. Hier haben wir daher eine Abwertung in der Gesamtnote vorgenommen.

The B Stride 5 UP from Unitron is a traditional hearing aid that is worn behind the ear. The customer receives a suitably sized hearing aid at a reasonable price from the upper mid-range, which can compensate for moderate to strong hearing needs.

Hearing comfort

In the section on hearing comfort, we look at how a hearing aid manages all the background noise. Comfortable noise management greatly contributes to whether a user likes their hearing aids and wears them regularly. With this Unitron device, the manufacturer provides the customer with comprehensive noise management. The regular noise suppression aims to dampen uniform, rumbling background noises. In the B Stride 5 UP, we find a rather below-average noise suppression. Noise-sensitive individuals will have to make some compromises when it comes to hearing comfort.

Additionally, there is a really strong impulse filter that reduces all short, intense impulses as much as the customer desires. The B Stride 5 UP is equipped with incredibly good wind detection. Nothing stands in the way of a walk by the sea. An adaptable directional microphone helps separate speech from noise, but we miss a true 3D experience. 16 adjustable equalizer bands allow enough room to generate a reliable, tailored listening experience.

Speech in noisy environments is always a challenge. Unitron addresses this issue by using artificial intelligence. The result is brilliant and clear speech transmission, while the ambient noises still come through realistically loud.

Operation & connectivity

How can you fully leverage the potential of hearing aids in everyday life? We found out what access options are available with the B Stride 5 UP. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. With it, you can adjust the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer wishes. The use is, of course, optional. A discreet way to adjust the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits in any pocket. When the person you are speaking to is too quiet again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.

Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Unitron unfortunately cannot yet. This would be practical when fingers are no longer very agile or when you simply like smart gadgets. Another option to control the hearing aids is tap control. You simply tap your fingers on your ear, which triggers a specific function. However, this option is not available in this Unitron device.

An app on the smartphone is supposed to make operation easier, and we have found one for the B Stride 5 UP. In addition to the basic functions like volume and programs, we find a few more buttons for personalization. You no longer need headphones here, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds directly from the smartphone to the ears – if the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

Simplicity & security

An important factor for the acceptance of a hearing aid is its practicality in everyday use. This includes features like automated functions, robustness, and user-friendliness. Hearing is greatly facilitated by good situational awareness. In the B Stride 5 UP, we have found a quite solid automation that handles the most common hearing situations well. This might be sufficient if the acoustic conditions are not too challenging. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and slowly get used to the new listening experiences.

The B Stride 5 UP is not rechargeable. It continues to draw power from disposable size 675 batteries, which need to be replaced every few days.

The hearing aid is classified under IP protection class 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust ingress. Water also cannot easily harm the hearing aid. Thus, it is well equipped for outdoor activities, where it can sometimes get wet and dirty. However, do not necessarily go swimming or bathing with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can alter the composition and may ultimately cause damage.

Extras

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we find something here: Unitron has integrated a noise generator that plays some soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can divert attention from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.

A real added value is the remote maintenance service. For a change in hearing aid settings, you no longer have to go to the specialist store, but can directly contact the audiologist via the app. Through a cloud service, you can then load the new data package into the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.

Many hearing aids still come with a few health features today. However, since the B Stride 5 UP does not have any special sensors for this, we cannot present any particular highlights here. The device from Unitron focuses on the essential hearing functions and does not offer extras like voice assistants or translation functions. While those might have been fun, they are not necessary for a good listening experience.

Conclusion: Unitron B Stride 5 UP

With a final grade of 2.58, this model holds its own in the mid-range. It has a fairly decent level of comfort features on board, sufficient for typical everyday moments and creates a satisfactory listening experience.
