Widex: a pair of behind-the-ear devices
4/5 Rating ****

The Widex Allure 110 RIC in review

Here we take a look at a hearing aid from a still moderate price category that is worn behind the ear. It is called Allure 110 RIC and comes from the manufacturer Widex. It can be used by all people who have both mild and stronger hearing needs and desire a hearing aid of very small size. Due to the deep placement of the speaker in the ear canal, it has very good sound characteristics.

Finally, news from the house of Widex: With the Widex Allure, the manufacturer remains true to its own sound philosophy and continues to swim against the tide of AI strategies.

Hearing comfort

What is most annoying for hearing aid users? Exactly, background noises. That's why we first take a look at the comfort features of the test device. The Allure 110 RIC allows for solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional. Normal noise suppression is definitely present. It is supposed to dampen constant sounds like traffic noise or the hum of air conditioning. In our test device from Widex, we have quite decent noise suppression. It may be too weak if you are often in traffic, but it is manageable in everyday life.

The impulse sound management in this model is not particularly powerful, but at least sharp noises are somewhat cushioned. For windy situations outdoors, Widex has included wind noise reduction. This is quite useful and is simply part of a modern comfort feature set. Let's quickly take a look at the equalizer: with 8 bands, it is not very flexible. With a few more channels, we would certainly have achieved a nicer, more natural sound experience. But at least we can reasonably adjust the sound to our hearing preferences. The hearing aid can automatically orient itself towards the speaker in front of you, but we don't receive much more support for spatial hearing from the Allure 110 RIC.

If the hearing comfort is not sufficient, you can make additional personal adjustments in the app. There is a special mode that uses artificial intelligence. This allows countless real sound data to be used to help you specifically and effectively.

With Widex PureSound, you can hear voices and everyday sounds as clearly and naturally as you haven't in a long time – ideal for mild to moderate hearing loss. The special technology prevents sound distortion, making it easier to adapt to the hearing aid experience.

Operation & connectivity

Most hearing aids automatically adapt to their surroundings. However, it is sometimes very practical to be able to change something yourself. After all, the hearing aid doesn't know how you are feeling at the moment. We looked into the control options that the Allure 110 RIC offers: For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume up or down, there is a button on the device. You can also select additional programs for special hearing situations through this. The small remote control, which is available as an option, is very practical. For us, this is one of the most convenient ways to make the hearing aid louder or quieter or to switch to another hearing program. No one notices, and there's no need to reach for your ear.

We are always excited when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional function. For instance, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. But that is currently not available in the Allure 110 RIC. A touch control requires that sensors are implemented in the hearing aid. This is indeed the case here. You can simply tap the ear shell with a few fingers or your flat hand to trigger a command. This could be, for example, the activation of a TV adapter or answering a phone call. Your hearing care professional will set up the exact configuration with you.

In the App Store, we also find a suitable application from Widex. The app for the Allure 110 RIC is not one of our highlights, but it has everything you need for your hearing systems. You don't need headphones here anymore, as it has a wireless option and can transfer sounds from the smartphone directly into your ears – provided that the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

The app may not have classic lifestyle features, but it can significantly simplify your daily life with the hearing aids. For example, set a reminder function to remind you to wear the hearing aids. Or use the hearing aid finder if you can’t remember where your hearing aids are.

Simplicity & security

An important factor for the acceptance of a hearing aid is its practicality for everyday use. This includes, for example, automated functions as well as robustness and user-friendliness. Simplicity in a hearing aid means for us, above all, that it adapts flexibly to changing hearing scenarios. The Allure 110 RIC did not quite convince us in this regard. There is indeed a situation detection feature that differentiates between quieter and louder environments. That works well. However, those who are actively engaged in life may occasionally encounter limitations with this. But that’s not too bad; one can revert to manual adjustment options. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new auditory impressions.

An extremely useful development in recent years, in our opinion, is the integrated rechargeable battery. We are used to recharging electronic devices in our everyday lives. The Allure 110 RIC is also rechargeable, allowing us to avoid the hassle of battery changes.

We enjoyed an unencumbered daily life during our test thanks to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We walked through the rain and subsequently removed the hearing aids with wet hands—no problem at all. However, the water resistance applies strictly to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bath water or saltwater.

A telephone coil (T-coil) transmits sound directly into the hearing aid - for example, with telephones or in public facilities with loop systems. Widex promotes greater inclusion, as no smartphone connection is required. The hardware is already integrated, but currently not activated. Once available, the function can be conveniently activated with the push of a button on the hearing aid.

Widex: Charging station with hearing aids

Widex Allure 110 RIC: Charge the hearing aids for 4 hours for a full charge. This will accompany you for about 20 hours throughout your day. The exact capacity depends on your hearing loss and your personal streaming behavior.

Extras

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find some here: Worth mentioning is the tinnitus program. Those who are troubled by annoying ear noises will benefit from this. Pleasant, quiet sounds are adjusted to gently surround the tinnitus. In the end, the tinnitus fades into the background noise and becomes hardly noticeable.

A very good additional benefit is offered through remote maintenance. Through the app, you can contact your audiologist and describe your hearing problem. They can adjust the settings accordingly and upload them to the hearing aids via the app. For people with limited time or a long commute, this is a great service.

Many hearing aids still have a few health functions today. However, since the Allure 110 RIC does not have any special sensors for this, we cannot present any special features here. This Widex hearing aid does not have any additional lifestyle options available. Elsewhere, there are voice assistants or reminder functions, but you don't need them for good hearing. It would have just made the product a little cooler.
