Once again, we focus on a hearing aid from the company Widex. This time it is a conventional behind-the-ear hearing aid called Magnify 100 BTE 13 D. It is a small hearing aid, and it is priced in the low-budget range. It can be used for mild to severe hearing losses. Let’s take a look at what the interior has to offer:

Hearing comfort

Good speech understanding is a given in modern hearing aids. Equally important is the hearing comfort. Only when the ratio of speech transmission to the level of background noise is right will hearing be perceived as pleasant. That's why we take a look at the comfort features: In the Magnify 100 BTE 13 D, we find only the absolute necessities when it comes to hearing comfort. Normal ambient noises like street noise, vacuum cleaner noise, or the sound from a fan should be dampened by a classic noise suppression. In this Widex hearing aid, we are not exactly spoiled, but can manage well with simple noise suppression.

Even in cheaper hearing aids, we often find dampening for impulsive, clattering sounds today. However, this clever tool is unfortunately not included here, which is a pity. When the wind sweeps over the microphones in nature, we wish for wind noise reduction. However, this is missing here, and in some outdoor situations, it can significantly impair hearing comfort. We miss a good spatial sound, but the automatic focus can be quite helpful in situations with multiple people. The equalizer in the Magnify 100 BTE 13 D has only 6 bands. This means that when making changes, one can only access fairly large frequency ranges. You end up changing a lot at once, and the subtle details cannot be implemented.

Widex does not yet utilize artificial intelligence in this version.

Operation & connectivity

The majority of functions are activated automatically by this Widex model. However, it can sometimes be very useful to have the option to expand the functionality a bit further. In our test, we discovered what options we have here. A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can increase or decrease the volume in several levels. You can also activate additional programs for special hearing situations with it. If someone prefers not to use the button, they can simply have it deactivated. A remote control for the hearing aid is available upon request. This makes it easy to adjust the volume effortlessly. The handling is not only child’s play, but nobody will notice that you are adjusting your hearing aids.

The modern method of control via voice command is not yet present in the Magnify 100 BTE 13 D. Tap Control would have been an interesting feature as well. With it, you can change the function with a quick tap on the ear. But that is not available here in the Magnify 100 BTE 13 D yet.

In the App Store, we also find an appropriate application from Widex. The app for the Magnify 100 BTE 13 D is not one of our highlights, but it has everything you need for your hearing systems. For our digital everyday life, a streaming option would not be bad. The present device fulfills our wish and comes with a 2.4 GHz radio module. This allows you to send phone calls and sounds directly from the smartphone to the hearing aids.

Simplicity & security

An important factor for the acceptance of a hearing aid is its practicality in everyday life. This includes, for example, automated functions as well as robustness and user-friendliness. We would have liked a program automation in the Magnify 100 BTE 13 D that adapts itself to the environment. However, this feature is not available, so unfortunately, points are deducted in this regard. The adaptation to the new hearing experience is supported by a fully automatic acclimatization manager in this device. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I don’t have to do anything other than regularly wear my hearing aids.

The Magnify 100 BTE 13 D is not rechargeable; it operates with hearing aid batteries. Unlike rechargeable batteries, there is no need to charge it daily, but the size 13 battery will need to be replaced after a few days.

The datasheet certifies the Widex device with an IP protection class certification of 68. This makes it one of the most resilient hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water cannot enter the housing as long as it does not submerge deeper than 1.5 meters. However, be cautious. Shampoo, for example, alters the surface tension of water. You should also avoid salt water. In everyday life, though, you can act completely carefree.

Lastly, we are interested in whether there are a few extras on top: Are you one of the tinnitus sufferers? Then you could use the optional tinnitus program in the Magnify 100 BTE 13 D. Soft, gentle sounds are tuned to your hearing and engage all areas of the inner ear. It’s nothing more than a distraction technique, and it works surprisingly well. The tinnitus disappears in the general noise and no longer bothers you. This is a simple yet effective tool and earns extra points from us.

A very good additional benefit is the offering of remote maintenance. Through the app, you can contact your audiologist and describe your hearing problem. They can adjust the settings accordingly and upload them to the hearing aids via the app. For people with little time or a long travel distance, this is a great service.

Many hearing aids still come with a few health functions today. However, since the Magnify 100 BTE 13 D does not have any special sensors for that purpose, we cannot present any specific features here. The hearing aid does not include additional functions such as special assistance systems, a fall alert, or speech translators. This is not a big deal, as it has no impact on the important hearing functions.
